FORT WORTH-<\/strong> An American Airlines (AA)<\/a> passenger demanded that a fellow traveler surrender his first class bulkhead seat on a flight from Chicago (ORD) to Boston (BOS), then insulted him when the request was refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traveler, Anthony Losanno of The Bulkhead Seat<\/a>, kept seat 1B. A woman about half the other passenger’s age later boarded and sat beside him, and the pair spent the next several minutes trading insulting text messages about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seat Swap Demand Turns Hostile Before Departure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Losanno was one of the first passengers on board and settled into 1B, the bulkhead seat he books whenever he flies in first class. A man aged 50 boarded shortly afterward and instructed him to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man told him: “Hey buddy. Yeah. Uh. I need you to grab seat 4E. Okay. Just a few rows back over there. Yeah. No biggie. Just take that one. It’s just over there, and I’ll sit here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losanno declined and explained that he was comfortable where he was and always books the bulkhead in first class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man became annoyed, called him an expletive, and walked back to his assigned seat. That seat was actually 4F, a window seat without direct aisle access, not the 4E he had offered in the swap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 5 minutes later, a woman around half his age boarded and took the seat next to Losanno at the bulkhead. She was surprised to learn that she could not keep her bags by her feet in the bulkhead row and appeared generally confused by the cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Text Messages Visible From Adjacent Seat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Her phone soon lit up with messages, and Losanno could see the screen because of the way she was holding the device. The messages were about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man seated behind them wrote that Losanno had been wrong not to move seats and sent a string of curses about him. The woman replied in the same tone while giggling. Losanno said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He suspected the 2 were involved in an extramarital situation but stated that he could not confirm it. The Chicago to Boston flight runs about 2 hours, and Losanno noted that the man did not need to sit beside his companion for that duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Request Failed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Losanno wrote his account after reading a post on airplane seat-swapping etiquette published the same morning. He noted that few topics generate as much debate among travelers as switching seats on an aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media fills every week with stories of passengers refusing swaps, heated confrontations, and viral videos of cabin arguments. Opinions differ on whether anyone should agree to move, but insulting the person being asked almost never produces the desired result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asking another passenger to switch is a normal part of air travel. Aircraft swaps, cancellations, and late bookings often separate people traveling together, and a polite request costs nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three basic conditions decide whether such a request succeeds. The person asking should ask politely, offer a seat of equal or better value, and accept a refusal without argument. As reported by Live and Let’s Fly<\/a>, the American Airlines passenger failed on all three counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Seat Is A Request, Not An Obligation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The seat shown on a boarding pass belongs to the passenger for the duration of the flight, whether it is an aisle, a window, an exit row, or an extra legroom seat, and whether it was paid for or selected at booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another traveler is always free to ask for a swap, and the seated passenger is equally free to decline. No explanation is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers choose specific seats for reasons that are not visible to others. Some paid extra, some need quick access to the aisle, some want to be near the lavatory, some have anxiety about flying, and some simply prefer the location they selected months earlier. Those reasons do not have to be shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start With Courtesy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A polite request goes a long way for anyone who needs to sit with a spouse, child, or travel companion. Losanno suggests simple wording: “Would you mind switching seats with me, so that I can sit with my [fill in relationship]?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is no, the request should end there. Accepting a refusal gracefully costs nothing and avoids turning a two-second exchange into a dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swap requests succeed most often when the offered seat matches or improves on the current one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A passenger in an aisle seat is understandably less likely to accept a middle seat several rows back, and asking someone to give up an exit row or premium seat for a standard economy seat rarely works. The more equitable the exchange, the higher the chance of a yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losanno applies the same standard to his own requests and trades aisle for aisle or window for window in first class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recalled one woman who asked him to move from 1B to 37E so she could sit with her husband in 1A. He replied that she could ask the passenger in 37D to take 1A instead, and she was aghast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressure Tactics And Insults Reduce The Odds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Involving nearby travelers or making the interaction public is a common mistake. Rolling eyes, complaining loudly, or announcing that someone will not switch seats rarely changes the outcome and usually creates tension before the aircraft has left the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insults work even less well. Calling another passenger selfish, rude, or entitled almost never persuades them to reconsider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cursing and raising a voice escalates a simple request into a confrontation that may require flight attendants to intervene. Air travel is stressful enough, and a few harsh words can sour the atmosphere for everyone seated nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabin crew generally will not force a passenger to give up the seat listed on their boarding pass unless a safety issue or an operational reason requires the move. Crew members may help find volunteers or facilitate a swap, but the final decision rests with the passengers involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most travelers are willing to help when treated with respect. A polite request, an understanding attitude, and appreciation for either answer can turn an awkward moment into a pleasant one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losanno concluded that asking is acceptable, refusing is acceptable, and courtesy produces better outcomes than insults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He considered publishing the man’s name but decided it would do nothing to change that level of entitlement. Travelers who need to sit together have a simpler option, which is to select adjoining seats at the time of booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
