SYDNEY-<\/strong> Former Qantas (QF)<\/a> chief executive Alan Joyce has acknowledged that he made mistakes during his final years leading Australia’s flag carrier, reflecting publicly on the challenges that defined the airline’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking nearly three years after leaving the role, Joyce accepted responsibility for decisions that drew widespread criticism while maintaining that the airline ultimately survived because it made more correct decisions than incorrect ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joyce, who led Jetstar for five years before spending 15 years as chief executive of Qantas (QF), said the pandemic transformed what had been one of the airline’s strongest periods into its most difficult chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interview, aired on Australia’s 60 Minutes, marked his first extensive public comments since stepping down in September 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joyce<\/a> described his two decades in senior leadership as comparable to “dog years,” explaining that the role brought both extraordinary highs and prolonged periods of intense pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the airline entered a survival phase after international borders closed and passenger demand collapsed almost overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Joyce, Qantas reached a point where it had only 11 weeks of available cash<\/strong> before the risk of insolvency became a serious concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said executives were forced to make difficult decisions to preserve the airline’s future, describing the period as the toughest of his professional career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the pandemic, Qantas had reported record financial performance and strong customer satisfaction ratings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joyce said he had expected to retire while the airline was at its peak, but COVID-19 dramatically changed those plans and forced management to focus entirely on survival rather than growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
