AICHI\u2013<\/strong> Japan<\/a> has selected Mitsubishi Heavy Industries\u2019 (MHI) Komaki South Plant in Aichi Prefecture as the national assembly site for its Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) sixth-generation fighter, marking another major milestone in the trilateral defense project with the United Kingdom and Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision strengthens Japan\u2019s industrial role as the program advances toward its planned 2035 service entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GCAP initiative brings together Japan, the United Kingdom<\/a>, and Italy to develop a next-generation combat aircraft that will eventually replace the Mitsubishi F-2 in Japan and the Eurofighter Typhoon<\/a> fleets operated by the UK and Italy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the program does not involve commercial airlines or airports, it remains one of the world’s most significant multinational aerospace projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest development follows the recent \u00a34.6 billion ($6.1 billion) contract awarded to Edgewing, the joint venture leading the aircraft’s design and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan Assembly Plans Confirmed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Japanese media reports, final assembly of Japan’s GCAP fighter will be conducted at MHI’s Komaki South Plant in Toyoyama, Aichi Prefecture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facility already serves as one of Japan’s premier military aircraft production centers and has extensive experience assembling Lockheed Martin F-35A fighter jets<\/a> for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its established production infrastructure, highly skilled workforce, and ongoing collaboration with British engineers made the plant the preferred choice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engineers from the United Kingdom are already working alongside MHI specialists to develop key structural elements and manufacturing processes for the future aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Japan has confirmed its national assembly location, the three partner nations have yet to finalize the complete industrial workshare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, certain assembly activities may also be performed at manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom and Italy as the production strategy evolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program Development and Progress Updates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each GCAP partner is simultaneously expanding its domestic development capability. Japan expects to establish its dedicated development center before the end of the year, while the United Kingdom will operate its center in Warton and Italy will oversee development from Turin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, BAE Systems has reported significant progress on the Combat Air Demonstrator that will validate technologies for the operational fighter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around half of the demonstrator has already been assembled, with engineers completing more than 11,500 components representing roughly 90% of the aircraft’s structural mass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent \u00a34.6 billion international contract awarded to Edgewing funds the advanced concept, assessment, detailed design, and development phases through the end of 2027. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement represents one of the largest milestones achieved by the program since its launch and keeps the multinational fighter on track for operational service by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advanced Technologies for GCAP Fighter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Japan continues to play a leading role in the aircraft’s technological development. The country is responsible for designing the airframe and applying advanced composite materials that reduce weight while enhancing radar stealth characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toshiba has introduced an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for the fighter, while IHI continues evaluating its XF-9 engine technology for potential integration into the future aircraft, Militarnyi <\/a>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In parallel, BAE Systems plans to use the Orpheus engine in its technology demonstrator to support propulsion testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond stealth and advanced propulsion, the sixth-generation aircraft will integrate artificial intelligence, autonomous capabilities, unmanned teaming, next-generation sensors, and sophisticated electronic systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These technologies are intended to enable the fighter to operate alongside platforms such as the F-35 while replacing the Eurofighter Typhoon and Mitsubishi F-2 fleets in the coming decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program officials have also reaffirmed that the 2035 entry-into-service target remains unchanged despite growing international interest from potential future partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
