The outage affected passengers, airport facilities, and food outlets as authorities worked to restore service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disruption impacted travelers using London Gatwick Airport (LGW)<\/strong>, including passengers flying with airlines such as British Airways (BA)<\/a>, easyJet (U2)<\/strong>, TUI Airways (BY)<\/strong>, and Vueling (VY)<\/strong>. Airport staff distributed bottled water while essential facilities remained unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London Gatwick Airport (LGW)<\/a>, the United Kingdom’s second busiest airport, confirmed at around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday that a failure in the local water supply had affected both its North and South terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without running water, passengers were unable to flush toilets or wash their hands, creating long queues and sanitation concerns throughout the airport. Restaurants, caf\u00e9s, and other food concessions were forced to suspend operations because they could not safely prepare or serve food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airport staff responded by distributing bottled water to travelers coping with warm summer temperatures across southeast England. Despite the disruption, flight operations continued while airport teams focused on supporting passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power Outage at Water Treatment Plant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The disruption was traced to a wider infrastructure issue affecting the Horley area, where Gatwick Airport is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local utility provider SES Water explained that a power outage shut down the Bough Beech Water Treatment Works early Sunday morning. Although electricity was later restored, the company encountered several technical complications that delayed the return of normal water service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem was first reported around 6:00 a.m. on July 26. Engineers worked for nearly eight hours before the treatment facility resumed operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even after the plant restarted, SES Water warned that it would take additional time for water pressure and supply to return fully across the affected network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a public statement, SES Water apologized for the disruption and thanked customers and Gatwick Airport for their patience while restoration work continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gatwick Continues Plans for Future Capacity Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While managing the immediate disruption, Gatwick continues advancing long-term infrastructure improvements designed to increase capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport was originally constructed with two parallel runways. However, international aviation safety standards currently allow only one runway to be used for regular arrivals and departures because of the limited separation between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the southern runway, designated 08R\/26L<\/strong>, handles normal flight operations, while the northern runway, 08L\/26R<\/strong>, primarily serves as a taxiway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Gatwick’s expansion proposal, the centerline of the northern runway will be moved approximately 12 meters north<\/strong> to meet international safety separation requirements. Once completed and approved, the modified runway will support routine flight operations and significantly increase the airport’s overall capacity without constructing an entirely new runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
