DALLAS-<\/strong> Southwest Airlines (WN)<\/a> will begin a westbound overnight flight from Las Vegas (LAS) to Honolulu (HNL) on March 12, 2027, a schedule the carrier itself calls a reverse red-eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight departs Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) at 2:45 AM and lands at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) at 6:10 AM local time, making it the latest scheduled departure in Southwest’s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside Southwest’s 2:45 AM Departure to Hawaii<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The route is not new. Southwest has served Las Vegas<\/a> to Honolulu<\/a> for years, and the March 2027 change adds an overnight departure time rather than a new city pair. Tickets went on sale when the airline disclosed the schedule on July 16, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service is planned 4 times weekly with a block time of 6 hours and 25 minutes. Hawaii does not observe daylight saving time and sits 3 hours behind Pacific daylight time, so the aircraft lands 3 hours and 25 minutes later on the clock than it departed, despite flying through most of a night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will also be Southwest’s first overnight flight operating from the mainland to Hawaii. The carrier’s existing Hawaii red-eyes all run eastbound, carrying passengers from the islands to Las Vegas and Phoenix (PHX) for early morning connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers face an unusual airport routine. Most travelers will reach the terminal in Las Vegas around 1 AM or 2 AM local time for a departure shortly before 3 AM. They land in Honolulu at the very start of the day, hours before standard hotel check-in opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How a Reverse Red-Eye Differs From a Normal Overnight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Conventional red-eye flights in the United States operate eastbound. An aircraft departs a West Coast city late in the evening, flies through the night, gains hours from the time change, and lands on the East Coast the following morning. The same pattern applies to flights from the United States to Europe and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A westbound overnight reverses that mechanism. The aircraft departs in the middle of the night and moves backward across time zones, which compresses the arrival time rather than extending it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a flight that begins at an hour most passengers consider the middle of their sleep cycle and ends at dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Driving Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Southwest built the departure around demand between Hawaii and Las Vegas, a market so heavily used by Hawaii residents that the city carries the nickname the ninth island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry analyst Robert Mann, speaking to TPG, described the route as unusually strong on point-to-point traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s in a market that has huge [origin] and [destination] demand,” Mann said. He added, “I think you’d find people checking out, spending a day in Las Vegas, waking up in time to get to a 2:30 a.m. flight.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mann also pointed to a scheduling advantage. “There’s network benefit,” he said, “in the sense that it provides an airplane in Honolulu early in the morning to come back.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft would otherwise sit on the ground in Las Vegas overnight. Under the new schedule, it reaches Honolulu at dawn and can operate a morning departure back to the mainland, a timing travelers prefer because it delivers an afternoon arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airlines normally park an aircraft in Hawaii for eight or more hours to offer that morning return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest’s Rapid Shift Into Overnight Flying<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Southwest operated no red-eye flights before February 2025. The airline launched its first overnight services that month from Las Vegas and Los Angeles (LAX), then expanded quickly across the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to The Points Guy<\/a>, schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows Southwest now operates more than a dozen routes departing after midnight, with the latest departure times concentrated at Las Vegas and Phoenix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Honolulu flight tops that list. Behind it sit a 1:45 AM Phoenix to Chicago Midway (MDW) departure, a 1:25 AM Las Vegas to Dallas Love Field (DAL) service, and a 1:15 a.m. Las Vegas to Houston Hobby (HOU) flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wider March 2027 Network Update<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The reverse red-eye was one part of a schedule announcement covering 15 new routes across 20 cities, all launching in March 2027 and timed for spring break bookings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New markets include Baltimore\/Washington (BWI) to Philadelphia (PHL), Dallas Love Field to Detroit (DTW), Nashville (BNA) to Des Moines (DSM) and Wichita (ICT), and Las Vegas to Boston (BOS), Miami (MIA), Philadelphia, and Knoxville (TYS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caribbean and Latin America service also grows, including a Saturday-only Nashville to Aruba (AUA) flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combined with added frequencies on existing routes, the update gives Southwest its largest ever schedules at Orlando (MCO) and Austin (AUS). The Austin build helps the carrier hold its market lead there against Delta Air Lines (DL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Airlines Already Fly Westbound Overnights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Southwest is copying a pattern that already works on the same route. Hawaiian Airlines (HA) operates a Las Vegas to Honolulu departure at 1:55 AM that arrives at 5:25 AM local time. That flight uses a twin-aisle Airbus A330-200, an indication of the volume the overnight window supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A longer example crosses the Atlantic. Spanish flag carrier Iberia (IB) operates flight IB363 from Madrid (MAD) at 12:55 AM, landing at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) at 5:30 AM local time after close to 12 hours in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline retimed the route on October 28, 2025, creating the first scheduled westbound red-eye between Western Europe and the United States. Iberia flies it four times weekly in winter and daily in summer on the Airbus A330.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madrid schedule works on connecting traffic. Late evening arrivals from across Europe feed the departure, and the dawn landing at Dallas connects to a wide bank of American Airlines (AA) morning departures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Passengers Should Plan For<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
