By comparison, the airline’s long-haul Airbus A350 offers 32 inches of pitch in economy.

Removing seven economy seats allows the airline to spread that space across the cabin. Guillaume Vivet, General Manager of Customer Experience Design at Cathay Pacific, told Executive Traveller that stripping out revenue-earning seats was a difficult call, but said “it’s the right thing to do for us,” adding that few airlines worldwide would make the same choice.

Cathay Pacific has not published the revised pitch figure. The airline promoted the change on LinkedIn as a new economy layout with “fewer seats and more legroom,” describing it as an enhanced A321neo experience for regional flights arriving in summer 2026.

Economy passengers will also see a new colour, materials and finish scheme across the cabin.

Photo: Wikimedia Commons

Rear Lavatories Move Forward to Free Up Galley Space

The aircraft will keep 3 lavatories at the rear, but they have been rearranged to create a more expansive galley area.

The current units are the narrow cubicles that have become standard across the A320 family. Vivet described the reorientation as the change that allows larger washrooms than the cramped cubicles fitted today.

Cathay Pacific says repositioning the lavatories turns the freed space into a dedicated service area in the galley.

Vivet linked that extra room directly to an upgraded economy meal service, noting the airline listened to cabin crew who wanted to deliver stronger service on the type.

Cathay Pacific Boeing 777-300ER First Class; Photo- Cathay Pacific

Exit Row Layout Is Reworked

According to OMAAT, the aircraft moves from one set of mid-cabin exit rows and one set of rear exit rows to two sets of mid-cabin exit rows, a more efficient arrangement.

The practical gain from this rework goes beyond what the 7 seat reduction alone suggests, because it changes how usable floor space is distributed through the cabin.

Cathay Pacific is also renumbering rows across the aircraft. The current scheme runs as high as row 69, an unusual figure on a single-aisle jet. The new numbering follows the conventions used on long haul aircraft.

Seat maps covering both the existing and updated layouts have been published, showing the full extent of the reconfiguration.

Cathay Pacific has no plans to fit new business class seats on the A321neo, even as regional rivals add flat beds to narrowbody aircraft.

China Airlines (CI), Korean Air (KE), Singapore Airlines (SQ), and Thai Airways (TG) all offer lie-flat products on selected single-aisle regional services.

The 12 recliners stay in place. The order did not start with the mainline carrier. Cathay Pacific inherited the aircraft and their pre-set cabin configuration after Cathay Dragon was closed in October 2020 during a large pandemic restructuring.

The airline later expanded the order after the type proved its value. The A321neo now serves as the workhorse of the Cathay Pacific regional network.

Cathay Pacific was the first airline in the world to install 4K ultra-high-definition inflight entertainment screens, which it fitted across the A321neo fleet alongside Bluetooth audio streaming and high-speed Wi-Fi.

The cabins also carry extra-large overhead bins sized for eight carry-on bags and LED mood lighting, while the LEAP engines and winglets cut carbon dioxide emissions per seat by 22 percent.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Delivery and Retrofit Timeline

Cathay Pacific operates 16 A321neos today.
