The latest data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/tag\/dgca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)<\/a> shows IndiGo carried nearly two out of every three domestic passengers during June 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Air India (AI)<\/strong> and <strong>Air India Express (IX)<\/strong> together saw their combined market share decline as capacity cuts affected operations across major airports, including <strong>Delhi Airport (DEL)<\/strong> and <strong>Mumbai Airport (BOM)<\/strong>. This marks a significant improvement from <strong>64.5%<\/strong> during the same month last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In comparison, the combined market share of Air India and <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/tag\/air-india-express\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Air India Express<\/a> declined to <strong>23.9%<\/strong>, down from <strong>27.1%<\/strong> a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shift reflects a growing gap between India&#8217;s largest airline and its closest competitors. This represented a decline of around <strong>7%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IndiGo followed the opposite strategy by expanding its domestic network. Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Aggarwal said on <strong>17 July<\/strong> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/19\/air-india-to-restore-international-flights-from-september-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">airline plans to restore capacity across most domestic and international routes<\/a> beginning in <strong>September 2026<\/strong> as operational challenges ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img <strong>1.9%<\/strong>, the lowest among India&#8217;s scheduled airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the airline added <strong>195 domestic departures<\/strong>, representing approximately <strong>3% growth<\/strong>, its limited fleet, legal disputes with aircraft lessors, grounded aircraft, and financial constraints continued to affect performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The modest increase in capacity shortages at Air India allowed IndiGo to capture displaced passenger demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jainam Shah, Aviation Analyst at Equirus Securities, said delayed aircraft deliveries, fleet upgrades, retirements, and supply chain issues reduced aircraft availability for Air India, enabling IndiGo to significantly expand its market share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that although Air India expects to restore capacity from September, recovering lost market share is likely to take time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amit Mittal, Director at Aerointellect Aviation, said the June figures reflect a widening gap within India&#8217;s aviation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, passengers affected by Air India&#8217;s reduced capacity and SpiceJet&#8217;s operational difficulties largely shifted to gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among India&#8217;s ten busiest airports, IndiGo recorded an <strong>on-time performance (OTP) of 89.4%<\/strong> during June. The Air India Group followed with <strong>85.9%<\/strong>, while Akasa Air achieved <strong>82.7%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SpiceJet recorded the lowest OTP at <strong>33.5%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IndiGo also maintained one of the industry&#8217;s lowest cancellation rates at <strong>0.2%<\/strong>, compared with <strong>0.49%<\/strong> for the Air India Group.
