GENEVA-<\/strong>\u00a0Swiss International Air Lines (LX)<\/a> removed two pilots from duty at Geneva (GVA) in May 2026 after fellow crew members reported them\u00a0unfit to fly. The two pilots were scheduled to operate an Airbus A220 to a European destination the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colleagues at the crew hotel described the pair as clearly intoxicated the evening before the planned flight. LX replaced both pilots before their shift began and later suspended them pending an internal investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Crew Members Flagged the Two Geneva Pilots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The two men spent the evening together at the Geneva crew hotel. They were due to fly a Swiss Airbus A220<\/a> across Europe the following morning, but that flight did not go ahead as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both pilots drank later and far more than the rules allowed before a shift. Observers that evening called their condition “clearly intoxicated.” The pilots also failed to recognize their own state and did not report themselves as unfit to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their crewmates noticed the problem and acted. They reported the two pilots to their supervisor. “The indications were so specific that we had to question the pilots’ fitness for duty,” a Swiss spokesperson told aeroTELEGRAPH<\/a>, confirming the incident. “The two pilots were taken off duty and replaced at the crew hotel before their shift began.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alcohol Rules for European Cockpit Crews<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

European cockpit crews face a blood alcohol limit of 0.2 per mille. This small allowance covers measurement errors or trace alcohol taken in through food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of this legal limit, airlines apply a strict zero-tolerance policy before a shift, as set out in their manuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The industry also follows the eight-hour rule, often described as “eight hours from bottle to throttle.” Many airlines go further and require twelve hours without alcohol before a flight. Some extend this window to a full 24 hours. The two pilots in Geneva ignored both the legal limit and these internal rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SWISS Points to a Working Safety System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Swiss stressed that neither pilot<\/a> entered the cockpit that morning. The airline said the case shows its safety mechanisms function as intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our safety mechanisms are working: employees took responsibility and reported their observations. We acted immediately and applied the established procedures,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This safety culture helps the airline “identify and eliminate risks before they impact flight operations,” the spokesperson added. The company said its crews follow clear limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our crew members have clear and strict guidelines regarding alcohol consumption. They are not permitted to begin or perform their duties under the influence of alcohol,” the spokesperson continued. Swiss said it holds the highest standards for flight safety and does not tolerate alcohol abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Pilots Suspended Pending Investigation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Swiss has suspended both pilots until further notice. “The relevant departments are currently investigating the incident. Until this is completed, the pilots in question will not be deployed on flight duties and will therefore not be conducting any flights,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline treats breaches of its internal safety principles seriously. Such violations “can have consequences under labor law,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
