Kennedy International Airport (JFK). The widebody was operating flight <strong>LH405<\/strong> to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) when the event unfolded during its initial climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trouble began when the flight crew tried to turn further left to avoid heavy weather ahead. Air traffic control audio shows the crew asking for headings that would keep the aircraft clear of the storm cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The controller first turned the flight eastbound and then assigned a series of left headings toward its first fix, MERIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the weather worsened, the crew reported that everything ahead of them was red on the radar and asked for a heading much further to the left, around 240 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The controller questioned the request, noting that other traffic was routing toward MERIT without any complaint. The crew then agreed to follow the controller&#8217;s direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moments later, the controller instructed the flight to turn right onto heading 360 and delivered a firm warning. He told the crew: &#8220;This could be a possible pilot deviation. The controller then approved a left heading of 205 and handed the flight to another departure frequency. Flight LH405 is a scheduled service between <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=New+York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York JFK<\/a> and Frankfurt (FRA), one of Lufthansa&#8217;s core transatlantic routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frankfurt serves as the airline&#8217;s largest hub and its main base for transatlantic operations.
