Meals must be served, carts must move through the aisles, and the crew must stay awake and alert for safety reasons.

Some noise is unavoidable, especially for passengers seated near a galley. Travelers who choose seats in those rows should expect a degree of disruption from normal service activity.

Photo: American Airlines

Where Loud Crew Conversations Cross The Line

Sustained personal conversations and laughter at full volume are a separate issue. There is no operational reason for crew members to treat the galley like a break room while passengers sleep a few feet away.

This matters more in business class. Airlines promote flat beds as a main benefit of paying thousands of dollars or redeeming a large number of miles for an overnight flight. A flat bed loses much of its value when the people responsible for the cabin keep passengers awake.

The Boeing 787-9 is also a relatively quiet aircraft. That design usually benefits travelers, but it also allows conversations and galley noise to carry farther than crew members may realize. Similar complaints have surfaced on other American redeye routes, including service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

Photo: American Airlines

Should Passengers Speak Up During The Flight

Some readers argued the passenger should have asked the crew to lower their voices during the flight. A polite request at the moment would have been the best first step and might have solved the problem right away.

The reluctance is also understandable. Passengers may hesitate to confront a group of flight attendants who control service for the rest of the journey. A reasonable traveler could worry that even a calm request would be read as hostile or entitled.

Filing A Complaint After The Flight Remains Fair

Choosing not to speak up onboard does not make the behavior acceptable. Sending American Airlines a calm, factual account remains a fair response.

Such a complaint should include the flight number, date, cabin, and approximate seating area. Clear details give the airline what it needs to review the incident and remind crews that a reasonably quiet cabin is part of good overnight service.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Bottom Line

Some galley noise on an overnight flight is unavoidable, and passengers near the galley must accept a certain amount of disruption. Loud conversations and laughter throughout the night are a different matter.

Flight attendants are entitled to talk with one another. They should also remember that nearby passengers may have paid a large premium for one thing above all else, which is sleep. A lie-flat seat cannot deliver rest when the crew keeps the cabin awake.

Stay tuned with us.
