Five of these services were operated from London Gatwick Airport (LGW), while two departed from London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

Network adjustments are a normal part of airline planning. British Airways regularly reviews demand, aircraft utilization, and operational performance before making route decisions.

Several markets have been consolidated at Heathrow, allowing the airline to deploy more suitable aircraft, increase frequencies, improve passenger connectivity, and strengthen its market share from the UK’s busiest airport.

The comparison excludes routes that remain temporarily suspended because of the ongoing regional conflict involving Iran. It also excludes the temporary London Heathrow to Bangkok service that operated earlier in 2026 to provide additional nonstop capacity for passengers returning home.

Excluding that temporary operation, British Airways has operated its scheduled Bangkok service exclusively from London Gatwick since 2024.

These network changes reflect British Airways’ continued focus on concentrating capacity where demand and commercial performance are strongest.

Photo: By Anna Zvereva from Tallinn, Estonia – British Airways, G-ZBKP, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=78121351

5 Long Haul Routes End at Gatwick

British Airways operated its final flight between London Gatwick and Cape Town in January 2025. The South African service has since been consolidated at Heathrow.

Around the same period, Norse Atlantic Airways launched its own Gatwick to Cape Town service after entering the market in October 2024.

The airline also discontinued flights between Gatwick and Aruba during March 2025 after approximately 2 years of operation. The service operated via Antigua in both directions throughout its lifetime.

In October 2025, British Airways ended flights between Gatwick and New York JFK. During the same period, services between Gatwick and Las Vegas (LAS) were also discontinued.

Both routes were consolidated at Heathrow, where increased flight frequencies provide passengers with significantly better onward connections. Delta Air Lines (DL) and JetBlue (B6) have also withdrawn services on the Gatwick to New York JFK market.

British Airways also ended flights between Gatwick and San José (SJO), Costa Rica, in March 2026. The leisure focused route first launched in April 2016 and operated exclusively from Gatwick throughout its history.

Beginning in October 2026, the Costa Rica service will move to Heathrow, marking the first scheduled British Airways service between Heathrow and Costa Rica, as well as the airline’s first Heathrow route to Central America. The route will operate 5 times weekly using the Boeing 787-8, replacing the previous 3 weekly Gatwick flights operated by the high density Boeing 777-200ER. The higher frequency is expected to improve British Airways’ competitiveness in the London to Costa Rica market.

Photo: Ian Abbott | Flickr

Heathrow Drops Jeddah and Kuwait

British Airways discontinued flights between London Heathrow and King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah (JED) during April 2026.

The Saudi Arabian destination returned to the airline’s network in 2009 before being suspended in 2020. Services resumed in 2024 but operated for only 2 years before being withdrawn again. Over the years, the route has been served by the Boeing 747-400, Boeing 767-300ER, Boeing 777-200ER, Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9, and Boeing 787-10.

The airline’s decision reflects the route’s relatively weak premium demand compared with King Khalid International Airport, Riyadh (RUH) which generates stronger commercial returns. Once temporary regional disruptions related to the conflict involving Iran are resolved, British Airways plans to restore twice daily flights to Riyadh later in 2026.

Photo: Aero Icarus | Flickr

Kuwait Service Ends After More Than 60 Years

British Airways also ended flights between Heathrow and Kuwait (KWI) in March 2025, ending more than 6 decades of continuous service.

The route operated only once daily, while Kuwait Airways offered two to three daily services using the Boeing 777-300ER.
