LONDON-<\/strong> British Airways (BA)<\/a> cancelled a long-haul return flight from Barbados to London at the last minute on Saturday after hotel staff reported serious drunken and inappropriate behaviour by the cabin crew during an overnight layover. The carrier stood down the entire crew of up to 10 flight attendants only hours before the aircraft was due to depart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The affected service was flight BA254<\/strong> from Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) in Bridgetown, Barbados, to London Heathrow (LHR) on July 5. Many passengers had already started checking in when they learned that the flight would not operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Airways Crew Found Drunk Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The flight attendants had been on an overnight layover the previous Friday at an all-inclusive resort that offered free alcohol throughout the evening. Several crew members gathered in the hotel bar, where the situation quickly escalated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to The Sun<\/a>, one female crew member became so intoxicated that she was sick in the bar in front of shocked holidaymakers. A male colleague reportedly ended up in such a poor state that he had to be carried back to his room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the group grew louder through the night, other guests quietly asked them to calm down. One crew member responded by telling the guests that they were British Airways crew, dismissing the complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How the Cancellation Unfolded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Managers at British Airways’ London Heathrow<\/a> base learned about the overnight behavior and moved quickly to stand down every crew member scheduled to operate the return service. By that point, passengers were already checking in at Grantley Adams International Airport for their journey home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The travelers only then discovered that the flight had been cancelled, and they received no explanation for the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pilots later flew the aircraft back to London the same day with no passengers on board. Four crew members have since been suspended and flown home as passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Passengers Could Claim Under UK-261<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Because the cancellation stemmed from an internal issue within the airline’s control, passengers may be entitled to up to \u00a3520 ($693) each under the United Kingdom’s UK-261 passenger rights rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight operated on a Boeing 777-200<\/a>, which can seat up to 235 passengers. On that basis, British Airways could face a compensation bill of as much as \u00a3122,200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline is also expected to cover hotel accommodation for the overnight delay, along with food, drink, transport, and other reasonable expenses, PYOK<\/a> flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
