JAKARTA-<\/strong> Indonesia<\/a> has officially moved away from its long-standing plan to co-produce the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet with South Korea<\/a>, marking a significant shift in the country’s defense aviation strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of pursuing local manufacturing, Jakarta is now prioritizing the acquisition of ready-built combat aircraft while completing its revised commitments under the bilateral agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision concludes years of uncertainty surrounding the ambitious fighter development program launched in 2015. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KF-21, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), was expected to strengthen Indonesia’s domestic aerospace industry through technology transfers and local production, but financial challenges and changing procurement priorities ultimately reshaped the partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia originally agreed to contribute 20% of the KF-21 development costs<\/strong>, which were estimated at 1.6 trillion won, in exchange for extensive technology transfer and the right for state-owned PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) to manufacture 48 KF-21 Block-I fighter jets<\/a> in Bandung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the partnership faced repeated setbacks over delayed payments and prolonged negotiations. Reports of sensitive data theft involving Indonesian engineers further complicated the program, prompting both governments to revisit the original cost-sharing framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, Indonesia sought to extend its payment schedule until 2034, but South Korea rejected the proposal because it would have affected the aircraft’s planned induction timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two countries eventually reached a revised agreement that reduced Indonesia’s financial contribution to 600 million won, although the new arrangement also scaled back the scope of technology transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the revised settlement, Indonesian officials confirmed that the country would receive a single-seat KF-21 prototype instead of moving forward with domestic production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defense Logistics Agency chief Yusuf Jauhan later stated that plans to manufacture the aircraft in Indonesia would no longer proceed, ending speculation over the future of the co-production project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Indonesia has not ruled out operating the KF-21 in the future, defense officials have indicated that purchasing completed aircraft has become a more practical option than investing in local assembly lines and industrial infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security analysts believe the decision reflects financial realities rather than a loss of confidence in the fighter itself. They argue that buying finished aircraft reduces development risks while allowing Indonesia to modernize its air force more quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change could also benefit South Korea’s export ambitions. A future Indonesian purchase of operational KF-21 fighters would provide an important international reference for the aircraft, potentially improving its competitiveness in the global fighter market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PT Dirgantara Indonesia has stated that discussions regarding future procurement options remain ongoing, with no final decision announced on the country’s next fighter acquisition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia is simultaneously evaluating several fighter aircraft to modernize its aging combat fleet. Among the strongest contenders are additional Dassault Rafale fighters<\/a> from France, which would expand the country’s existing order for 42 aircraft signed in 2022, Defense News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has also advanced plans to acquire 48 KAAN stealth fighters<\/a> from Turkish Aerospace Industries under a financing arrangement announced earlier this year. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2032, further diversifying Indonesia’s future air combat capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With domestic production of the KF-21 now abandoned, Indonesia’s defense strategy is increasingly centered on acquiring proven aircraft that can enter service without the complexities of joint manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision highlights Jakarta’s preference for faster fleet modernization while maintaining flexibility as it evaluates future fighter procurement opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
