BANGKOK\u2014<\/strong> Thai Airways (TG)<\/a> is preparing to make one of its most significant fleet decisions in the coming years as the carrier evaluates new-generation widebody aircraft to support long-haul expansion and replace aging Boeing 777 aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline expects to select its future flagship aircraft within the next one to two years, with deliveries anticipated from 2036 onward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement comes as the Bangkok (BKK)-based airline continues rebuilding its long-haul network following its financial restructuring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thai Airways is weighing the Airbus A350-1000<\/a> against the Boeing 777X<\/a>, with both aircraft under detailed evaluation as part of its long-term fleet modernization strategy aimed at improving efficiency and restoring nonstop services to North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thai’s Widebody Decision for Growth Strategy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thai Airways CEO Chai Eamsiri<\/strong> said the airline is conducting a comprehensive assessment of both aircraft families before making a final commitment. The evaluation focuses on operational efficiency, network flexibility, passenger demand, and long-term fleet requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier already operates the Airbus A350-900 on international routes and also retains options linked to its landmark 2024 Boeing order, Flight Global<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Singapore Airshow that year, Thai Airways committed to purchasing 45 Boeing 787 Dreamliners while securing options for another 35 aircraft, which can be converted into Boeing 777X orders if required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That flexibility allows the airline to adjust its future fleet according to market conditions without committing immediately to a larger aircraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selected widebody type is expected to gradually replace older Boeing 777-300ER aircraft<\/a> while supporting future international expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chai also confirmed that the airline does not intend to acquire the ultra-long-range Airbus A350-1000 variant. According to the airline, its higher seat costs make it less suitable for Thai Airways’ operational and commercial requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleet Modernization Through Boeing 787s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the next-generation flagship remains under evaluation, Thai Airways continues investing heavily in its existing widebody fleet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline recently accepted its first factory-built Boeing 787-9 powered by GE Aerospace GEnx engines, marking another milestone in its fleet renewal program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boeing 787 family<\/a> is expected to become the backbone of the airline’s long-haul operations over the coming decade. Its lower operating costs and flexible capacity allow the airline to match aircraft size with varying passenger demand across international markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Thai Airways plans to retire its remaining Boeing 777-200ER aircraft by the end of this year. However, its newer Boeing 777-300ER fleet will remain in service for at least another decade before replacement aircraft begin arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The combination of modern Boeing 787s and future large-capacity widebody aircraft is designed to create a balanced long-haul fleet capable of serving both established and emerging international destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North America Plans for Return<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A key objective behind the future aircraft selection is the planned return of nonstop flights between Bangkok and North America. Thai Airways suspended its North American services in 2015, largely due to fleet limitations and changing market conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline believes a new generation of larger, more efficient widebody aircraft will provide the range and economics needed to make those routes commercially viable again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deliveries beginning around 2036 would also coincide with the gradual replacement of the carrier’s Boeing 777-300ER fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming fleet decision represents another major step in Thai Airways’ long-term transformation strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By combining an expanding Boeing 787 fleet with a future flagship aircraft, the airline aims to strengthen its global network while improving efficiency, flexibility, and competitiveness in the international long-haul market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
