The 37th Training Wing, which oversees BMT, announced the death of trainee Keon McDaniel on June 16 following what it called a medical emergency. The wing said the cause was under investigation at that stage.

McDaniel was in his 6th week of basic training and served with the 737th Training Support Squadron, according to the Air Force. He suffered the medical emergency on June 12 and was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he died four days later.

On June 30, Castro wrote in a statement that the Air Force confirmed McDaniel’s death was related to the flu. In a later press conference, Castro said the Air Force told his office it had recorded 284 cases and four hospitalizations among trainees.

Air Education and Training Command, which oversees the 37th Training Wing and BMT, did not answer questions about the number of cases and hospitalizations, or whether McDaniel’s death has been officially linked to the flu.

An Air Force spokesperson said the 37th Training Wing has been managing a localized influenza outbreak among BMT trainees in close coordination with the 59th Medical Wing, the largest medical wing in the service.

Medical professionals and public health officials put mitigation measures in place to isolate and treat symptomatic trainees and reduce further exposure.

Medical personnel are also monitoring trainees who had close contact with sick members in case they become symptomatic. Symptomatic trainees are receiving appropriate care with antiviral medications such as Tamiflu, and they return to training once medical professionals clear them.

Representative Photo: US Air Force

Vaccine Dropped Months Before Outbreak

The outbreak has drawn extra scrutiny because it followed a major policy shift. In April, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that he was rescinding the mandate for active-duty troops and trainees to receive the annual influenza vaccine.

Hegseth said in a video posted on social media that the notion a flu vaccine must be mandatory for every service member, everywhere, in every circumstance at all times was overly broad and not rational.

The Associated Press reported on June 24 that only around 40 percent of Air Force trainees took the flu shot after Hegseth made it optional.

That figure sat slightly below the 46.5 percent of American adults who received the shot this past flu season, according to the CDC.

The drop was steep for the trainee population. ABC News reported that the vaccination rate among recruits at the San Antonio base fell from nearly 100 percent, when the shot was mandatory, to roughly 40 percent after the policy became voluntary.

Representative Photo: U.S. Air Force | Thomas Coney, identified by DVIDS

Vaccine Requirement Returns for Trainees

Since the outbreak, the flu vaccine is once again mandatory for Air Force trainees. Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed to the magazine that the Air Force, along with the Army, Navy, National Security Agency, and Defense Health Agency, asked for and were granted exceptions to the new policy.

Anthony Tata, the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, was directed to consolidate the requested exceptions.

The Pentagon has long He and Rep. The 2021 mandate requiring all service members to receive COVID-19 vaccinations fueled a robust political debate.

Around 8,000 service members were ultimately required to separate for refusing the Pentagon’s mandate, and the Pentagon has since taken steps to allow some of them to return.

Stay tuned with us.
