Canberra Airport (CBR) serves as the main gateway, sitting about 8 km from the city centre with domestic links to Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), and Brisbane (BNE), plus select international connections.

The city is known for its national institutions, from Parliament House to the National Gallery of Australia, alongside parks, lakes, and hiking trails. This guide covers how to reach Canberra, how to get around, and the main attractions, dining, shopping, and festivals worth planning for.

Discovering Australia’s Capital City

Canberra combines urban design with natural surroundings in a way few capitals match. The skyline mixes modern architecture with landmark public buildings, while the city layout keeps major sights close together. Visitors can move between the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, and Lake Burley Griffin on foot, which makes short trips easy to plan.

The city functions as both a political centre and a cultural hub. World-class museums, including the National Museum of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia, sit alongside parks and nature reserves. This balance of culture and outdoor space gives travellers flexibility across a single visit.

Photo: Mark Direen | Pexels

How to Reach Canberra

Canberra connects to the rest of Australia by air, train, bus, and road.

By air, Canberra Airport (CBR) handles domestic flights from major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, along with some international services. The airport lies roughly 8 km from the city centre, and travellers can reach the centre by taxi, ride-sharing services, or shuttle buses.

By train, Canberra Railway Station in Kingston links the city to Sydney and Melbourne through NSW TrainLink services. The station sits close to the city centre and offers standard passenger amenities.

By bus, Transport Canberra runs an extensive local network, while long-distance coach operators such as Greyhound Australia connect the city to other towns and cities. The main interchange is located in the central business district.

By car, well-maintained highways link Canberra to Sydney and Melbourne. Rental agencies operate at the airport and across the city, giving travellers flexibility to explore nearby attractions.

Getting Around the City

Once in Canberra, visitors can use an efficient public transport system of buses and light rail operated by Transport Canberra, with routes covering the city and its suburbs. Cycling is also popular, supported by dedicated bike lanes and paths. Many central attractions, including the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, and Lake Burley Griffin, are within walking distance of each other.

Places to Visit

Canberra offers a mix of viewpoints, national institutions, and gardens. Notable stops include:

Mount Ainslie Lookout, with panoramic views of the cityscape and surrounding landscape

Australian War Memorial

Parliament House

National Gallery of Australia

National Museum of Australia

Australian National Botanic Gardens

Lake Burley Griffin

Cockington Green Gardens

Most of these sites take one to two hours to explore, making it possible to combine several in a single day.

Where to Eat

Canberra’s dining scene spans modern Australian cuisine and international flavours. Courgette Restaurant serves seasonal modern European dishes such as seared scallops and slow-cooked pork belly. Akiba focuses on Asian BBQ with wood-fired grills and dishes like Korean fried chicken and pork belly bao. BlackFire brings a Mediterranean menu built around a fire pit and wood-fired oven, including wood-fired octopus and slow-cooked lamb shoulder. Lazy Su offers a fusion of Japanese, Korean, and American comfort food, with favourites like the ramen burger and kimchi fries.

Shopping in Canberra

The city has markets and precincts for a range of tastes. Fyshwick Markets offer fresh produce, seafood, Asian groceries, and homewares at competitive prices. Kingston Foreshore lines Lake Burley Griffin with independent shops, cafes, and galleries. The Mitchell antique strip draws collectors with furniture, jewellery, and vintage items. The Capital Region Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning at Exhibition Park in Canberra, selling seasonal produce, baked goods, and dairy.

Festivals and Best Time to Visit

Spring, from September to November, is widely considered the best time to visit Canberra. The season also aligns with Floriade, Australia’s largest flower festival, which transforms Commonwealth Park into floral displays. Other major events include the National Multicultural Festival, the National Folk Festival held over Easter weekend, and the Canberra Balloon Spectacular each March.

Visa and Immigration

Canberra follows the same visa rules as the rest of Australia. Indian citizens can apply for an Australia Tourist Visa (Subclass 651) for stays of up to three months within a year, or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) if eligible. A Subclass 651 application requires a passport valid for at least six months beyond departure, proof of financial resources, travel insurance, and supporting documents with fees.

Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and most European nations, do not need a visa for short tourist stays, provided their passport stays valid for at least three months beyond their intended departure.

Stay tuned with us.
