Dr. Michael Park, who is not of Japanese descent, said the moment reduced him to a stereotype that was not even his own.

Park shared the experience on Instagram, questioning why someone greeting passengers at the gate was allowed to interact with travelers without intervention. Park said a man standing near the gate greeted him with “Konnichiwa,” the Japanese greeting, even though he is Korean-American.

Park said he initially believed the man was a United Airlines employee because he was positioned near the gate and appeared to be greeting passengers as they left the aircraft. When Park confronted him, the man denied being employed by the airline.

Park then shared the experience on Instagram, explaining that the encounter affected him because he felt reduced to a racial stereotype.

He said that despite years of education and his work toward becoming a physician, he was still judged based on assumptions about his ethnicity. Aviation outlets subsequently reported the account after his post drew attention.

In his post, Park reflected on the idea that professional achievement does not shield a person from prejudice.

He said many people believe that success, education, or career accomplishments will eventually protect them, but that his experience reinforced the opposite conclusion.

Park wrote:

“You think if you just achieve enough, work hard enough, become impressive enough that you’ll become exempt.
