The agency will then build its own database of crew members cleared to use the access point.

When a crew member reaches the CMAP access point, the TSA takes a photograph and cross-references it against the CMAP database and an existing federal photo record.

A successful biometric match allows the crew member to skip screening. If the match fails, the crew member must use the TSA PreCheck lane instead.

The program will remain voluntary. American Airlines carries the largest bill at $2.64 million, reflecting its roughly 30,000 flight attendants and 17,500 pilots. The other major carriers face the following annual costs:

United Airlines (UA): $2.17 million

Delta Air Lines (DL): around $1.95 million

Southwest Airlines (WN): approximately $1.38 million

JetBlue (B6): around $456,000

Crew members can use CMAP whenever they are on duty and when traveling domestically for personal reasons, matching the access they had under KCM.

From Known Crewmember to CMAP

Since 2011, pilots and flight attendants have skipped passenger screening through KCM, a joint initiative between the Air Line Pilots Association and the industry trade group Airlines For America (A4A).

A4A administered the program and supplied the TSA with a database of vetted crew members. At the KCM podium, a TSA officer scanned a crew member’s badge to confirm their name on the database and matched it against their airline-issued ID.

Early last year, A4A and the TSA agreed to retire KCM. The program is expected to be permanently sunsetted at the end of 2026. Until now, U.S. airlines funded KCM through their A4A membership, but CMAP will require them to pay the federal government directly.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Why the Fee Exists and When It Starts

The DHS explained that Congress directed the TSA in 2006 to collect a fee covering the costs of any registered traveler program.
