Airbus and Boeing offer crew rest modules as optional equipment, allowing airlines to decide whether to purchase and install them.

British Airways chose not to install crew bunks on its Boeing 787-10 fleet, enabling the airline to add three additional Economy Class seats. The carrier also operates several Boeing 777-200 aircraft that have never been equipped with dedicated cabin crew rest areas, PYOK reported.

Until now, cabin crew assigned to these aircraft have relied on so-called “high-comfort attendant seats.” These fold-down jumpseats near the cabin doors offer limited comfort and are primarily designed for safety rather than extended rest.

Under the revised policy, cabin crew may now use any unoccupied passenger seat during scheduled rest breaks.

If First Class or Club World seats remain empty, crew members can sleep there and use the bedding provided for those cabins. Fully booked flights will continue to require that crew rest in the designated jump seats.

Representative Photo: British Airways

Fleet Limitations Impact Operations

European and UK flight time limitation rules require lie-flat, private crew rest facilities only on longer-range operations where extended duty periods increase fatigue risks.

As a result, British Airways schedules its non-bunk Boeing 787-10s and Boeing 777-200s on routes where dedicated bunks are not legally required.

However, the lack of crew bunks has reduced the operational flexibility of the Boeing 787-10 fleet. Although the aircraft is capable of flying much longer distances, the lack of adequate crew rest facilities limits the routes it can legally operate.

British Airways is expected to receive new Boeing 787-10 aircraft later this year with factory-installed crew bunk facilities. Existing aircraft, however, cannot be retrofitted with the system, making the new seating policy a practical solution for the current fleet.

Photo: Aero Icarus | Flickr

Passenger Reaction Remains Mixed

British Airways also plans to “soft block” selected Economy Class rows at the rear of the cabin for crew rest whenever flights are not full. Unlike permanently reserved seats, these rows remain available for sale if passenger demand requires them.

The policy has generated mixed reactions among frequent flyers. Some passengers argue that allowing crew members to sleep in premium cabins could diminish the exclusivity of First and Business Class.

Others believe the airline’s decision to omit crew bunks during aircraft purchases created the problem in the first place and support providing cabin crew with more comfortable rest whenever spare seats are available.

Several international airlines already reserve passenger seats for crew rest on aircraft without bunks, making British Airways’ latest policy another example of airlines adapting existing cabin layouts to meet operational and fatigue management requirements.

Stay tuned with us.
