United follows as the second-largest airline with more than 16%, and American sits close behind at roughly 15%.

As American has gradually given up corporate market share in recent years, Delta and United have become the main rivals for high-value transcontinental business demand.

The competition will be intense on the Newark and Washington routes. The carrier is building a second Delta One lounge at the airport, with details kept relatively quiet.

The facility is now slated to open to the public by 2028, a timing that would align well with any Philadelphia and Washington Dulles launch.

Photo: By Charles – https://www.flickr.com/photos/charles79/52699473700/, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=138210993

Questions Remain Over Lie-Flat A321neos

Delta planned to operate many of these premium transcon routes with its new Airbus A321neo subfleet. The 21 aircraft are fitted with 16 lie-flat Delta One suites, but certification problems with the cabin’s Safran Vue seat have kept them out of service. As a result, Delta has adopted a temporary layout of 44 domestic first-class recliner seats.

The first premium A321neo was delivered in October 2024, but had to be parked as the certification issues continued. Delta has since flown its reconfigured narrowbodies on routes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to LAX, San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San Diego International Airport (SAN), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

Whether the lie-flat A321neos will be ready in time for Philadelphia or Washington Dulles remains unclear. Some reports suggest Delta may drop the Safran Vue seat entirely and switch to the Thompson Aero VantageSOLO seat, a product already used by carriers such as Iberia and JetBlue.

Stay tuned with us.
