DOHA-<\/strong> A Boeing 777 freighter<\/a> destined for Qatar Airways Cargo (QR) sparked widespread debate after performing an extremely low flyby over Horseshoe Bay Resort Airport in Texas on June 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Footage of the maneuver quickly spread across social media, with several experienced pilots and aviation commentators describing the pass as dangerously close to the runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft, registered N705DN, was conducting a pre-delivery test flight before joining the Qatar Airways Cargo fleet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While painted in the airline’s livery, the aircraft was not yet operated by Qatar Airways (QR)<\/a> and was flying between Grissom Aeroplex and Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport (AFW), making an unexpected stopover near Horseshoe Bay Resort Airport before continuing its journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Videos captured by visitors at Horseshoe Bay Resort Airport show the Boeing 777 flying just a few feet above the runway with its landing gear retracted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the aircraft passed the runway, it entered a right bank that appeared to bring the starboard wingtip even closer to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved was originally delivered to Delta Air Lines<\/a> in 2009 before the carrier retired its Boeing 777 fleet in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was later acquired by aircraft leasing and sales specialist Jetran, converted from a passenger aircraft into a dedicated freighter, and prepared for delivery to Qatar Airways Cargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flyby occurred during what has been described as a final pre-delivery acceptance flight. Instead of following the most direct routing from Indiana to Texas, the aircraft made a detour over Horseshoe Bay, where Jetran is headquartered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expert Reaction on Qatar’s Low Flyby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The maneuver drew immediate criticism from several aviation professionals after the footage went viral online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve Giordano, co-founder of Nomadic Aviation Group<\/strong> and an experienced airline pilot, described the flyby as “inches from disaster,” questioning why such a maneuver was performed with a large widebody aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other pilots and aviation commentators echoed similar concerns, characterizing the pass as unnecessarily risky and inconsistent with the conservative approach typically expected during aircraft delivery flights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many also questioned whether such a display was appropriate, given that the aircraft already wore Qatar Airways Cargo colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although no official explanation has been provided for the low pass, some observers believe the aircraft’s visit to Horseshoe Bay may have been linked to Jetran’s operations at the airport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither investigators nor aviation authorities have publicly confirmed the purpose of the maneuver, PYOK flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jetran’s Response<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following widespread attention on social media, Jetran released a statement distancing Qatar Airways from the incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company emphasized that although the aircraft carried Qatar Airways livery, it was neither owned nor operated by the airline at the time of the flight, and the flight crew were not Qatar Airways pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jetran added that the Boeing 777 was undergoing its final pre-delivery test flight before entering service with Qatar Airways Cargo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company also stated that it expects the relevant aviation authorities and involved parties to investigate the incident thoroughly and determine whether any operational standards were breached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
