SHANGHAI\u2014<\/strong> Chinese airlines<\/a> are expanding their international networks at a time when many global carriers face capacity constraints, higher operating costs, and geopolitical uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest route launches and service resumptions highlight China’s growing role in global aviation and its determination to strengthen international connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China Eastern Airlines (MU)<\/a> recently resumed nonstop flights between Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), restoring a route that had been suspended for six years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restart comes as Chinese carriers continue to add destinations across Europe, Asia, and other international markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China Eastern Resumes Stockholm Flights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The renewed Stockholm service follows China Eastern’s launch of direct flights between Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) and Zurich Airport (ZRH), further expanding the airline’s European footprint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier has also outlined plans to introduce new services from Shanghai to Tbilisi, Dublin, and Cheongju in South Korea during June and July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional expansion is already under preparation, with Mumbai expected to join the airline’s growing international network in the coming months. These developments reflect a broader trend among Chinese airlines that are actively rebuilding and expanding overseas operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Capital Airlines (JD) launched a new round-trip service linking Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) with Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), Global Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European Network Expansion Accelerates Growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beijing Daxing Airport has emerged as a key gateway for international growth. Since the beginning of 2026, the airport has introduced new direct services to Helsinki, Frankfurt, and Milan, significantly strengthening its links with major European markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air China (CA) has also expanded operations from Daxing with new flights to Frankfurt and Milan. At the same time, Hainan Airlines (HU) integrated its Haikou-Chongqing-Madrid service into its broader European route network, providing travelers with additional connectivity options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China Southern Airlines (CZ) has contributed to this growth through services such as Guangzhou-Urumqi-Frankfurt, allowing more Chinese cities to connect with international destinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The continued expansion comes despite ongoing challenges facing the global aviation sector, including fuel price volatility and operational pressures linked to geopolitical developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China’s Aviation Recovery Momentum Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China shows that international services continue to grow during the Summer-Autumn 2026 season, which runs from March 29 through October 24. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese airlines and foreign carriers are scheduled to operate 21,047 international flights each week, representing a 1.8% increase compared with the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The international network now covers 86 countries and regions, underscoring the scale of China’s aviation recovery. A total of 191 airlines are participating in international operations during the current season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connectivity improvements are also supporting long-haul travel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juneyao Air (HO) and China Eastern recently expanded their cross-carrier transfer program at Shanghai Pudong Airport, enabling smoother connections to destinations including New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Sydney, and Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing inbound tourism is further supporting demand. Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) processed more than 457,000 inbound foreign travelers between January 1 and June 17, a 32.9% year-on-year increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visa-free arrivals accounted for more than 63% of the total, reflecting the impact of China’s travel facilitation measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expansion stands in contrast to broader global trends. While worldwide passenger demand declined by 3.4% in April 2026 according to industry data, Chinese airlines continue to add capacity and launch new routes, positioning themselves for sustained international growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
