Their origins trace back to Malayan Airways, which later evolved into Malaysian Airways and subsequently Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA).

Following Singapore’s separation from Malaysia in 1965, differing strategic priorities emerged. Singapore sought to build an international aviation hub, while Malaysia focused on strengthening domestic and regional connectivity across its larger geographic territory.

The airlines formally announced their split in 1971 and began operating independently in October 1972. Singapore Airlines inherited most of the international network, overseas offices, reservation systems, and long-haul aircraft fleet, View from the wing reported

Malaysian Airline System retained domestic routes and aircraft needed to serve communities across Peninsular and East Malaysia.

Interestingly, this is not the first time the carriers have cooperated on the Singapore–Kuala Lumpur corridor. From 1982 until 2008, both airlines jointly operated a shuttle-style service between the two cities.

The arrangement offered frequent departures throughout the day, creating a convenient option for business travelers. Revenue was shared equally, and both airlines maintained identical fares despite operating their own flights.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Singapore Kuala Lumpur Route

The historic shuttle model eventually faced pressure from the rapid growth of low-cost carriers. Airlines such as Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia entered the market with lower fares and increased competition, fundamentally changing passenger expectations on the short 184-mile route.

As budget airlines expanded operations, the premium shuttle concept became increasingly difficult to sustain. The original partnership ended in 2008, bringing a close to one of the region’s most distinctive airline collaborations.

Today’s joint venture reflects a different strategy. Instead of operating a traditional shuttle service, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines aim to deepen commercial cooperation while maintaining separate brands and operations.

The renewed partnership demonstrates how two airlines with shared roots can leverage their combined strengths to improve connectivity, expand customer benefits, and compete more effectively in a rapidly evolving aviation market.

More than five decades after becoming separate carriers, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines are once again working closely together on one of Southeast Asia’s busiest international routes.

Stay tuned with us.
