Of those 5 jets, this first delivery has shown the most severe teething problems by a wide margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problems emerged quickly. On April 24, during the return segment of the aircraft&#8217;s first international flight to Singapore, pilots declared an emergency diversion after reporting a worrying electrical smell spreading through the cabin shortly after takeoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident immediately raised concerns about the massive GEnx engines that power the <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/?s=Boeing+787-9\">Boeing 787-9<\/a>. United initially assigned the aircraft to domestic routes before returning it to international service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aircraft resumed flights to Singapore in early May, but the second attempt proved unsuccessful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N61101 was grounded again in Singapore and ferried empty back to San Francisco for additional testing before United switched it to London Heathrow services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The London flights initially appeared successful, leading United to return the aircraft to the Singapore route on June 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third attempt ended the same way. Another disruption followed after a June 13 flight to London, when mechanical problems again forced the jet out of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, N61101 was ferried back to San Francisco for the fourth time since entering commercial operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some early service issues can be expected on newly delivered aircraft. The faults are too complex for United&#8217;s own engineers to resolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paddleyourownkanoo.com\/2026\/06\/20\/uniteds-brand-new-boeing-787-dreamliner-with-swanky-new-cabins-has-been-returned-to-boeing-because-it-keeps-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">PYOK<\/a>, JonNYC described the aircraft&#8217;s problems as &#8220;not minor,&#8221; requiring Boeing&#8217;s direct involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The required repairs may be relatively straightforward once Boeing&#8217;s own technicians complete the work. The cabin includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>56 Polaris Business Class suites with sliding privacy doors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>8 Polaris Studio seats with additional personal space, greater legroom, and upgraded service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>35 Premium Plus seats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>123 Economy seats, including 39 Economy Plus seats with extra legroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Polaris Studio is a new premium concept for United, offering a more spacious experience than the airline&#8217;s standard Polaris Business Class product.
