The conversations spread through side meetings at the recent IATA Annual General Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro (GIG).

According to reporting by Brian Sumers of Airline Observer, the candidate list is already an open secret among well-connected insiders. The name drawing the most attention is former American chief Doug Parker, a prospect that has split opinion as the carrier plays catch-up on the premium strategy advanced by Delta Air Lines (DL) and United Airlines (UA).

Photo: American Airlines

Pressure Builds Over American’s Leadership Future

Two main theories explain when Isom might leave. The first holds that he could be gone by the end of the year. Supporters of this view argue that Isom has failed to lift American’s profitability in a meaningful way, even after a late move to premium that copied Delta and United.

They see his recent passenger experience upgrades, including Starlink internet, Bollinger champagne, and Lavazza coffee, as last-minute efforts to save his job rather than a real turnaround.

The second theory is more cautious. It suggests the board may give Isom additional time to protect its own credibility. Four current directors remain from 2016, when the board asked Scott Kirby to leave instead of positioning him as Parker’s successor.

Nine independent directors remain from 2023, a period widely viewed as the low point of American’s post-pandemic strategy decisions. Under this reading, removing Isom would force the board to admit that the strategies it endorsed have not worked, as View from the Wing reported.

Photo: American Airlines 777 by Clément Alloing Compounded by Aviation A2Z

How the Board’s History Shapes the Decision

Sumers points to United’s experience as a warning. After the carrier removed Jeff Smisek in 2015, major investors questioned whether the board itself was effective, and several directors faced pressure soon after.

The concern at American is similar. Many of the same directors who backed earlier strategy choices still sit on the board, which complicates any clean break from the current direction.

Sumers lists Parker first among the four top candidates to succeed Isom. Parker is not yet 65 and remains active in the industry, including a seat on the Qantas (QF) board.

He describes Parker as a steadying presence who built the modern airline pay structure and drove the mergers that reshaped the sector. Sumers does not expect Parker to push Isom out, but believes he could return if the board chose to make that move.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Why a Parker Return Draws Criticism

Critics argue that American’s current problems trace directly to Parker’s vision. His belief that the airline should compete as the lowest-cost provider of seats shaped a strategy that Isom continued, chasing Frontier Airlines (F9) and Spirit Airlines (NK) at a time when passengers were paying more for a better product.

Parker pushed Scott Kirby out of American and selected Isom as his eventual successor. Kirby later moved to United and led the turnaround that placed that carrier ahead of American. During Parker’s tenure, the airline lost an estimated 30 billion dollars in shareholder value, the largest such decline attributed to any airline chief executive. He funded more than 12 billion dollars in stock buybacks, added significant debt, and left American with structurally higher costs.

Parker also scaled back at New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX), two markets central to credit card and cobrand spending that drives much of U.S. airline profit. American’s cobrand card fell from first to third in spend.

He retired large parts of the fleet at the start of the pandemic, including Airbus A330s, Boeing 757s, 767s, and Embraer E-190s, which left the airline short of aircraft to rebuild its network in Europe and at Chicago O’Hare (ORD).

On the product, Parker removed seatback entertainment screens, reduced catering investment, and delayed in-seat power. These choices created the cabin layout gaps, often called the LOPA problem, that American is still working to fix today.

Photo: American Airlines

The Irony of the Current Strategy

Isom is now approving many of the upgrades American needs, including its shift toward premium. The criticism is that he has not sold this direction strongly enough to employees to repair the airline’s culture.

Even so, industry observers argue that returning to the leadership that created American’s problems would be the wrong response, which is part of why the possibility continues to generate concern.

Stay tuned with us.
