Gauss stated the airline is definitely interested in the type because it allows it to offer more routes.

Etihad Airways (EY) already operates the A321LR for added frequencies and lower-demand destinations, a model Gulf Air sees value in adopting.

The airline is also evaluating the longer-range Airbus A321XLR. Gauss noted the standard LR appears capable of meeting most of the carrier’s requirements, while the network team continues a closer assessment as part of the strategy still under development.

On widebodies, Gulf Air remains satisfied with its Boeing 787-9 fleet. Gauss confirmed the larger 787-10 is potentially interesting for future routes because it offers more possibilities, while the 787-8 holds no interest.

The Boeing 777X has also been identified as an aircraft of interest. He acknowledged the Airbus A350 would be a logical choice for an operator starting from scratch, but an existing Dreamliner fleet makes continuity the preferred path.

Smaller Aircraft Under Review for Regional Reach

To improve connectivity to the United Kingdom and similar markets, Gulf Air is studying aircraft with lower costs per flight.

Gauss identified two candidates: the Embraer 195-E2 and the Airbus A220. The question was framed against Royal Jordanian’s use of the Embraer E2 for regional feeder flights. These types would serve as supplementary options rather than core fleet members.

The airline’s primary focus remains on expanding its Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleet. Gauss explained that additional aircraft at both the higher and lower ends of the spectrum are needed to unlock new routes.

Photo: Anna Zverera | Flickr

Current Fleet Composition

Gulf Air operates a young fleet of 45 aircraft, weighted toward the Airbus narrowbody family. Gauss compared the scale of the disruption to COVID, noting the conflict hit the airline twice: fuel prices more than doubled, with effects still being felt, and no flights could depart Bahrain for 40 days.

A renewed missile attack on targets in Bahrain occurred around 1 a.m. on the night of June 2 to 3, but the missiles were intercepted, and the all-clear came swiftly.

Gauss said the region now handles such situations differently. Instead of a blanket closure, individual airspaces are selectively opened and closed as a military decision, after which the national aviation authority defines corridors and clears flights to resume. The process has become close to routine.

Gulf Air responded to the closure by flying all its airworthy aircraft to Dammam, connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway, a 30 to 40-minute drive across the border.

The carrier rebuilt passenger logistics on the ground, initially using a hotel lobby in Bahrain’s capital for check-in before converting a conference centre into a functioning terminal with a lounge and pick-up area.

Economy passengers travelled by bus, while business class passengers used a dedicated shuttle. With Bahrain also cut off by sea, the airline ran cargo shuttles using the Boeing 787 and moved freight by truck across the causeway.

The operation handled tens of thousands of passengers over several weeks. Gulf Air served 13 destinations from Dammam, about a quarter of its usual 54 destination network.

This included long-haul services to Bangkok (BKK) and Dhaka (DAC), plus daily flights to London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), and Paris (CDG).

According to Gauss, advance bookings have returned to pre-war levels, and traffic between Dubai and Bahrain is running normally again, though Dubai is not quite back to its former self.

The load factor sits at 81 percent, close to the 85 percent recorded before the conflict. He cautioned that the ongoing Hajj season can skew figures positively, with a clearer picture expected in about four weeks.

Photo: Aeroprints. com | Flickr

New Strategy on Premium Connectivity

Gauss rejected the “boutique airline” label, noting the carrier serves around six and a half million passengers.

Six weeks after his arrival, he presented a basic strategy to the board and leadership team. The details have since been developed with an international consulting firm, with a final report expected within four weeks ahead of a public presentation.

The emerging strategy positions Gulf Air as a premium connectivity provider for the Gulf region and, more importantly, for the Kingdom of Bahrain itself, which Gauss says lacks sufficient direct connectivity.

The airline currently serves around 50 destinations and plans to grow that number without becoming a mega-carrier like Emirates (EK) or Qatar Airways (QR).

He stressed the intent to revive the historic Gulf Air name, emphasising speed, precision, and quality across both premium and economy cabins.

Cabin changes are planned. Gulf Air will not introduce First Class but will expand Business Class and add a Premium Economy product, which Gauss views as standard industry practice and a source of additional revenue. He stressed that improving the economy remains equally important, given that most passengers travel in that cabin.

Digitalisation, service, and overall experience were named as areas requiring significant work. Gauss added that the airspace closure accelerated rather than delayed the strategy, as the pause exposed which processes were too complex.

Gauss attributed past losses to a lack of clear direction, citing frequent CEO turnover while competitors such as Emirates and Qatar Airways held to a clear strategy.

He said the airline now has a clear vision, a young fleet, and a strong new airport. Bahrain Airport offers transfer times of around 40 minutes and a maximum gate-to-gate time of 20 minutes, including security, which he positioned as a competitive advantage over larger, slower hubs.

Photo: By Anna Zvereva from Tallinn, Estonia – Gulf Air, A9C-FA, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=72241856

European Expansion and Zurich Target

Gulf Air operates to Frankfurt, Geneva (GVA), and Munich (MUC) in the German-speaking market. He noted Riyadh Air operates from Riyadh, a five-hour drive away.

Gulf Air holds 19 codeshare agreements and is expanding them, with Aegean Airlines and KLM as its only European partners so far. Gauss said the airline is not utilising these agreements fully, pointing to missed onward connections such as domestic links beyond Manila (MNL) with Philippine Airlines.

The carrier currently sees no need for a low-cost subsidiary and is not pursuing alliance membership, though Gauss did not rule it out for the future.

Gauss frames Bahrain’s low global profile as a core challenge, planning to address it by promoting the Kingdom’s world-class hotels, beaches, water sports, and 7,000-year cultural history, including its historic pearl trade. He expects tourism growth to support the airline’s expansion.

Photo: By Anna Zvereva from Tallinn, Estonia – Gulf Air, A9C-TD, Airbus A320-251N, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=87337872

Martin Gauss Background

Martin Gauss, 57, began his aviation career in 1992 as a Boeing 737 pilot with Deutsche BA, a British Airways subsidiary, and later rose to management.
