This is the same lunchtime-to-Manila, early-evening-return rotation that upgraded to the A350 Long Haul in late March.

From 25th October 2026, the MAX moves to the SQ916/921 pairing instead, an afternoon flight to Manila with a later return. At that point, SQ912/919 reverts to Airbus A350 Medium Haul operation.

For the rest of the summer season, the MAX displaces an A350 Long Haul, the most premium aircraft on the route. In winter, because the A350 Long Haul was never scheduled past 24th October anyway, the MAX displaces an A350 Medium Haul instead.

Either way, a wide-body makes way for a single-aisle jet, and a portion of premium capacity for both award and cash bookings disappears.

The Airbus A350 Long Haul variant reappears on SQ912/919 flights from 28th February 2027 through to late March 2027, though MainlyMiles notes this is subject to change as winter schedules are finalised. Provisionally, Boeing 737-8 MAX operation on the Manila route ends on 27th March 2027, with a return to A350 and 787 service afterwards.

Photo: Singapore Airlines

Summer Schedule From 1st August 2026

For the northern summer season, the five-times-daily Manila schedule places the Boeing 737-8 MAX on the SQ912 outbound and SQ919 return.

Singapore to Manila services run as SQ914 (A350 MH, 07:50 to 11:35), SQ910 (A350 MH, 08:50 to 12:45), SQ912 (737-8 MAX, 11:55 to 15:40), SQ916 (A350 MH, 13:30 to 17:25), and SQ918 (787-10, 19:35 to 23:20).

Manila to Singapore services run as SQ915 (787-10, 07:40 to 11:10), SQ913 (A350 MH, 13:05 to 16:50), SQ917 (A350 MH, 14:00 to 17:50), SQ919 (737-8 MAX, 16:55 to 20:30), and SQ921 (A350 MH, 18:35 to 22:20).

From 25th October 2026, the MAX shifts to the SQ916 and SQ921 rotation for the northern winter season, while SQ912/919 reverts to the A350 Medium Haul.

Photo: Live and Let’s Fly

A Poorer Passenger Experience

Singapore Airlines’ Boeing 737-8 MAX carries just 154 passengers, against 253 on the A350 Long Haul and 303 on the A350 Medium Haul.

Compared to the A350 Long Haul, which it replaces from 1st August 2026, the MAX brings a 76% cut in Business Class, from 42 seats down to 10. It also removes the 24-seat Premium Economy cabin, which was sold as Economy on this route, and offers a smaller Economy section. Against the winter A350 Medium Haul, Business Class falls 75%, from 40 to 10, and Economy is cut by nearly half.

The seating layout marks a clear step back. On the MAX, Business Class uses a 2-2, 1-1, 2-2 configuration in which two-thirds of window passengers must climb over a neighbour to reach the aisle. This contrasts with the A350’s 1-2-1 layout, where every Business Class seat has direct aisle access. The seats do convert into fully flat beds, now guaranteed in this cabin on all SIA flights network-wide.

Economy passengers also lose a little legroom and seat width, and the in-flight entertainment screens shrink in both cabins.

Photo: Clément Alloing

A350 MH and 737-8 MAX Compared

In Business Class, the A350 Medium Haul offers 40 seats in a 1-2-1 layout with full aisle access and 20 to 26 inch width. The MAX offers 10 seats in the 2-2, 1-1, 2-2 layout with no direct aisle access for 67% of window seats, and a 19 to 22 inch width.

In Economy, the A350 MH provides 263 seats at 32-inch pitch and 18-inch width, with 11.6-inch HD screens. The MAX provides 144 seats at 30-inch pitch and 17.7 inch width, with 10 inch HD screens. Both cabins offer a 5-inch recline and free Wi-Fi.

There are bright spots on the MAX, chiefly the two solo “throne” seats, 12B and 12J, which offer strong space and privacy. In the carrier’s early years, the single-aisle Boeing 707 was its workhorse and served Manila as part of SIA’s North Asian network. Those 707s remained in the fleet until the early 1980s, after which Manila went all-widebody through the A300, A310, 747, 777, and today’s A350s and 787s.

That makes the Boeing 737-8 MAX not the first single-aisle SIA aircraft to Manila, but the first in well over four decades. Narrow-body aircraft are common on the city pair regardless, as SIA’s budget subsidiary Scoot runs A320 family jets to Manila regularly, along with Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and others.

Photo: By Adznee Abas – https://www.flickr.com/photos/adzneetheairplanes/51714606977/, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=122563288

Why the Downgrade Is Happening

The likeliest explanation is that there may now be too much capacity on the Manila route, and the MAX is the tool Singapore Airlines has to address it.

In August 2025, the airline boosted Manila to a record five daily flights, partly to absorb demand left by the collapse of Jetstar Asia.

Trimming one rotation to a smaller aircraft is an easy way to dial capacity back without dropping a flight timing.

There is also an aircraft availability angle. As MainlyMiles reported in May, the Boeing 737-8 MAX is effectively SIA’s only growth vehicle this financial year.

All five of the carrier’s FY26/27 deliveries are MAXs, with no Boeing 787-10s arriving and the long-haul fleet shrinking by one aircraft as Boeing 777-9s remain uncertified. With delayed A350 retrofit work also looming, pushing the MAX onto established regional routes like Manila helps free up A350 capacity elsewhere.

Photo: Clément Alloing

KrisFlyer Award Rates

KrisFlyer members can redeem miles between Singapore and Manila one-way. Taxes and fees apply on top, typically around S$65 from Singapore and S$20 on the return leg.

Redemptions made on or after 1st October 2026, for travel on or after 1st January 2027, are also subject to Singapore’s new SAF tax on this route.

The bigger challenge for award seekers will be availability, since Business Class capacity on the affected rotation is cut by around three-quarters. PPS Club members retain slightly better access thanks to additional award inventory and remain the only passengers able to lock in the solo “throne” seats in advance.

Photo: Live and Let’s Fly

Bottom Line

Singapore Airlines bringing the narrow-body Boeing 737-8 MAX to Manila marks the return of the carrier’s single-aisle jets to the route after more than four decades. On a sub-four-hour sector, it is a sensible fit on paper, but the catch is what it means for cabin products.

The affected rotation loses roughly three-quarters of its Business Class seats in both seasons, and the summer change is the more painful of the two, undoing the recent A350 Long Haul upgrade that brought wider 2013 Business Class seats and a Premium Economy cabin to the route since March 2026.

Stay tuned with us.
