RIO DE JANEIRO<\/strong>\u2014<\/strong> Philippine Airlines (PR)<\/a> will join the oneworld alliance next year, the carrier confirmed in an announcement made at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro (GIG), Brazil. The alliance is led by founding carriers American Airlines (AA), British Airways (BA), and Qantas (QF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flag carrier will become the 16th member of oneworld and only the second full member based in Southeast Asia. Entry will connect Philippine Airlines passengers to a network of nearly 1,000 destinations across more than 170 countries and territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philippine Airlines to Join Oneworld Alliance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The move follows a partnership trail that pointed clearly toward membership. American Airlines first filed to codeshare with Philippine Airlines in March 2020, but the pandemic delayed that long-term direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The path resumed when oneworld carrier Alaska Airlines (AS) added Philippine Airlines as a partner last year, followed by Qatar Airways (QR)<\/a> just last month, as reported by View from the Wing<\/a>. Those agreements signaled steady alignment with the alliance well before the official announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PAL Holdings, Inc. President Lucio C. Tan III called the development a defining moment for the airline. He said membership strengthens Southeast Asia’s representation within the group and brings the Philippines closer to the world, with a focus on greater choice, consistent journeys, and Filipino hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Airlines<\/a> Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom<\/strong>, who chairs the oneworld Governing Board, said the entry supports the alliance’s long-term growth and strengthens connectivity across the Asia Pacific region. He noted that Philippine Airlines holds a proud heritage and will play a critical role in oneworld’s Southeast Asia network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Membership Means for Frequent Flyers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The change carries strong value for award travelers. Philippine Airlines has long offered good award availability, yet few practical booking options have existed, which meant little competition for its seats. That situation is likely to shift as more members gain access and demand rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. frequent flyers have rarely held large amounts of Mabuhay Miles. ANA, an American Express transfer partner, once allowed redemptions by phone, but those were generally suspended. American Airlines holds a partnership that does not yet include award redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once oneworld membership takes effect, awards are expected to become cheaper than current Qatar Airways pricing and far more accessible, though heavy demand from other U.S. members could absorb the space quickly. Reciprocal elite status benefits will also apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Routes and Aircraft to Target<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Philippine Airlines operates a strong North American schedule, giving travelers several options to use the upcoming alliance access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier serves Los Angeles (LAX)<\/a> twice daily, San Francisco (SFO) once daily, Honolulu (HNL) five times weekly, New York JFK (JFK) three times weekly, and Seattle (SEA) five times weekly. Chicago (ORD) service runs three times weekly starting November 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft to seek is the new Airbus A350-1000<\/a>, fitted with 42 business class suites with doors. The Airbus A350-900 remains a solid choice. The Boeing 777-300ER fleet appears in multiple configurations, including some with angled business class seats. The main point stands that availability can be excellent, and few viable booking paths exist outside the recent Qatar Airways partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outlook for the Alliance in Asia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Philippine Airlines was founded in 1941 and stands as Asia’s first commercial airline, with more than 85 years of service. The carrier operates from hubs in Manila (MNL)<\/a> and Cebu (CEB), reaching 29 domestic destinations and 40 international points across Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It holds APEX Four Star status and was recognized by Cirium for the highest on-time performance among Asia-Pacific carriers in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

oneworld currently brings together 15 airlines serving nearly 1,000 destinations, with access to more than 700 premium airport lounges worldwide. At the press event, no comment was offered on the separate plan for Taiwan’s Starlux Airlines (JX)<\/a> to join oneworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
