She said Central Asia is a strategically important Belt and Road region with strong business potential, and that Cathay shares the HKSAR Government’s interest in deepening connectivity with this emerging market.

Lau noted that the airline launched direct flights to Urumqi (URC) in Northwestern China last year, a city close to Central Asia that extended Cathay’s reach across the Belt and Road. She added that the Almaty announcement, made as the airline celebrates “80 Years Together” with Hong Kong, builds on that momentum and supports new flows of people, cargo, and capital.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Why Kazakhstan Matters to Hong Kong

Kazakhstan is Central Asia’s most developed economy. The city draws visitors with its mountain scenery, historic landmarks, and lively food and shopping scene.

Travellers from India can reach Almaty through direct and connecting flights, making it an accessible destination for a short cultural break or an outdoor adventure. This guide covers how to get there, what to see, where to eat and stay, and the best time to plan a trip.

Exploring Almaty: Kazakhstan’s Mountain Capital of Culture

Almaty served as the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997 and remains the country’s main commercial and cultural hub. The city pairs Soviet-era architecture with green parks, busy bazaars, and easy access to the surrounding mountains. Visitors can spend the morning at a museum or cathedral and the afternoon skiing or hiking within a short drive of the centre. This mix of city comfort and natural escape is the main reason Almaty appeals to a wide range of travellers.

How to Reach Almaty

By air: Air travel is the most convenient option. Almaty International Airport lies about 15 km northeast of the city centre and is served by several major airlines with connections across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. From the airport, taxis and public transport connect to the city.

By train: Almaty is linked by rail to neighbouring countries, with routes from cities such as Moscow, Beijing, and Urumqi. These journeys can take several days and offer sleeper compartments and scenic views. The city has two main stations, Almaty-1 and Almaty-2.

By bus: Bus services connect Almaty with nearby countries and other cities within Kazakhstan. Travel time varies by route, and buses remain a budget-friendly choice.

Terminal 2 Almaty Airport; Photo- Wikipedia

Getting Around Almaty

Public transport in Almaty includes buses, trams, and a metro system that cover most parts of the city.
