Hong Kong will gain its first direct air link to Central Asia after Cathay Pacific (CX)<\/a> confirmed plans to launch flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Almaty International Airport (ALA) in the first quarter of 2027. The route marks the carrier’s first-ever destination in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline will operate three flights per week using an Airbus A330-300 widebody aircraft. This service will be the only nonstop link between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan, strengthening the city’s position as a global super-connector along the Belt and Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cathay Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau announced the plan during an official visit to Kazakhstan. She joined a high-level delegation led by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)<\/a>, John Lee Ka-chiu, which traveled to Central Asia to explore new business opportunities for Hong Kong in emerging markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lau attended a ceremony alongside President of Almaty International Airport Goker Kose and Deputy Head of the Tourism Department of Almaty, Akmaral Yeshanova. She said Central Asia is a strategically important Belt and Road region with strong business potential, and that Cathay shares the HKSAR Government’s interest in deepening connectivity with this emerging market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lau noted that the airline launched direct flights to Urumqi (URC) in Northwestern China last year, a city close to Central Asia that extended Cathay’s reach across the Belt and Road. She added that the Almaty announcement, made as the airline celebrates “80 Years Together” with Hong Kong, builds on that momentum and supports new flows of people, cargo, and capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
