However, following the collapse of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the airline no longer requires the extended reach of the aircraft.

Last November, Wizz Air cut its order from 47 to 11 jets. Wizz Air now operates a total of eight A321 XLRs. Five are registered under Wizz Air Malta (W4) and three under Wizz Air UK (W9). Malin stated the airline will not use the XLR differently from other narrowbody jets in its fleet.

According to Malin, any destination only reachable with the XLR would push the airline beyond its established low-cost operating model. The commercial director highlighted that developing routes to West Africa would create unnecessary operational complexity. He added that competition on transatlantic routes to the United States remains too intense for the carrier.

Current destinations in the Middle East can be served using the standard A321neo. Flights further east would lead the airline into markets with insufficient passenger demand or excessive operational risk. Malin also noted the airline wants to avoid the difficulty of repatriating passengers from distant regions during disruptions.

Limited Use Cases for the Extra Range

Wizz Air has not ruled out using the A321 XLR for charter operations on longer routes, including potential services to the United States during the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Malin also explained that the aircraft can be useful during specific weather conditions, as the greater range provides an additional fuel buffer in strong headwinds.

Photo: By Anna Zvereva – https://www.flickr.com/photos/130961247@N06/52463427623/, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=125828336

Current XLR Operations From Milan and London

Of the four active A321 XLRs, two are based at Milan-Malpensa (MXP).
