TAIPEI, TAIWAN\u2014<\/strong> STARLUX Airlines (JX)<\/a>, Taiwan’s youngest international carrier, is targeting new routes to Zurich (ZRH) and Barcelona (BCN) as it accelerates its push into Europe. The airline, headquartered in Taipei and operating out of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), has already applied for regulatory approval for both routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chairman Chang Kuo-Wei announced the expansion plans at the airline’s annual shareholder meeting, confirming that Zurich and Barcelona are set to follow Prague (PRG), which will begin service on August 1. Beyond Europe, STARLUX (JX) is also targeting Australia<\/a> and New Zealand for 2026, with Sydney under consideration, alongside further expansion into the United States, Focus Taiwan<\/a> flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European Footprint on the Rise<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

STARLUX (JX) currently operates no direct flights to continental Western Europe, making the planned routes to Zurich (ZRH), Switzerland<\/a>, and Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), Spain, significant milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prague V\u00e1clav Havel Airport (PRG)<\/strong> will serve as the airline’s first direct European destination, launching on August 1, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Zurich and Barcelona routes remain pending regulatory approval but represent the airline’s clear intent to build a competitive European network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Network Set for Major Growth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

STARLUX (JX) currently serves four U.S. cities from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE): Seattle-Tacoma (SEA), Los Angeles (LAX)<\/a>, San Francisco (SFO), and Phoenix (PHX).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chairman Chang confirmed the airline is evaluating Chicago, Washington D.C., New York, and Dallas as additional U.S. destinations, which would substantially expand its North American footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia and New Zealand Enter the Picture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to its European and North American ambitions, STARLUX has identified Australia and New Zealand as key growth markets for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sydney is being considered as a potential destination, which would mark the airline’s entry into the Oceania region and further extend its long-haul network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleet Built for Long-Haul Ambitions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

STARLUX (JX) currently operates a fleet of 29 aircraft following the delivery of two Airbus A350-900s and one A330-900neo in the prior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To support its long-haul route strategy, the airline signed an agreement with Airbus in mid-2025 to purchase 10 Airbus A350-1000<\/a> passenger aircraft, a variant specifically built for extended long-haul operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, the carrier transported 4.90 million passengers and handled 87,000 tons of cargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cargo Business Gets a Dedicated Push<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the cargo side, STARLUX (JX) has ordered 10 Airbus A350F freighter aircraft. This move signals a strategic shift to develop the airline into a dual passenger and cargo carrier, building out dedicated air freight capacity alongside its expanding passenger operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oneworld Membership Still on the Horizon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Shareholders raised questions about when STARLUX (JX) would join the Oneworld alliance. Chairman Chang acknowledged that as a young carrier, the airline is not yet eligible for membership, with existing Oneworld members<\/a> advising STARLUX to first build partnerships with alliance carriers before pursuing full membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, STARLUX has established codeshare partnerships with Alaska Airlines (AS)<\/a> and American Airlines (AA)<\/a>, both of which are Oneworld alliance members, as a stepping stone toward eventual alliance integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
