AMSTERDAM\u2014<\/strong> Passengers aboard a United Airlines (UA)<\/a> Boeing 777 operating flight UA969 from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS)<\/a> to San Francisco International Airport (SFO)<\/a> experienced an unusually prolonged journey after the aircraft diverted twice during the same trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disruption stretched the transatlantic service into a nearly 24-hour ordeal involving a return to Europe and an unscheduled stop in the United States before finally reaching California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident began on May 24 when the Boeing 777-200ER departed Amsterdam for its scheduled nonstop flight to San Francisco. However, flight tracking data later showed the aircraft reversing course over the North Sea before safely returning to Schiphol Airport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After several hours on the ground for inspections, the same aircraft departed again, only to divert later to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) <\/a>during its second attempt across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United flight UA969 departed Amsterdam at around 3 PM local time aboard Boeing 777-200ER aircraft registered as N785UA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service normally takes approximately 11 hours and represents one of the carrier\u2019s daily long-haul links between Europe and the US West Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after departure, the aircraft stopped progressing westbound and began holding patterns over the North Sea before returning to the Netherlands. The jet remained airborne for close to two hours before landing safely back at Schiphol Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports circulating within aviation tracking communities indicated the crew may have been dealing with a technical issue onboard, although United has not officially confirmed the exact cause. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as a routine nonstop transatlantic service ultimately evolved into a multi-stage journey lasting nearly an entire day from the original departure time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unusual operational sequence quickly attracted attention across online aviation communities, where enthusiasts tracked the aircraft\u2019s movements in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved in the incident is among the oldest Boeing 777s in United\u2019s long-haul fleet. Delivered in the late 1990s, the 29-year-old jet continues to operate international routes despite its age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
