DUBAI-<\/strong> Emirates (EK) <\/a>has completed the first-ever retrofit and reconfiguration of one of its two-class Airbus A380 aircraft, marking another major milestone in the airline\u2019s multibillion-dollar fleet modernization program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upgraded superjumbo, registered A6-EUX, has already entered commercial service, operating flights between Dubai International Airport (DXB)<\/a> and Birmingham Airport (BHX)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly refurbished aircraft now features a three-class cabin layout with Emirates\u2019 latest onboard products, including Premium Economy for the first time on a former two-class Airbus A380. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline said the project forms part of its wider retrofit initiative aimed at improving cabin consistency and passenger experience across its long-haul fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates’ A380 Retrofit Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Emirates confirmed that A6-EUX is the first of 15 two-class Airbus A380 aircraft scheduled for full renovation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is being handled entirely by Emirates Engineering in Dubai, which has already retrofitted 95 aircraft, including 42 A380s<\/a> and 53 Boeing 777s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline initially launched the retrofit program in 2021 with plans to refurbish 120 aircraft. However, strong passenger demand and positive customer feedback prompted Emirates to expand the initiative to 219 aircraft by late 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, the retrofit strategy focuses on delivering a consistent premium onboard experience across the fleet. He noted that the extensive redesign of the two-class A380 demonstrates the airline\u2019s growing engineering and cabin modification capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The refurbished aircraft now offers 76 Business Class<\/a> seats, 56 Premium Economy seats, and 437 Economy Class seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates also introduced updated interiors across all cabins, including redesigned carpets, refreshed ceiling panels, premium wood finishes, and cabin motifs inspired by the Ghaf tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premium Economy Expansion in Emirates A380s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most significant changes involves the addition of Emirates\u2019 Premium Economy cabin on the upper deck of the Airbus A380. Previously, the airline\u2019s two-class aircraft operated without the intermediate cabin product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Premium Economy section features a 2-3-2 seating configuration with leather seats, adjustable headrests, built-in charging ports, leg rests, and 13.3-inch entertainment screens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates has aggressively expanded Premium Economy across its fleet as demand for upgraded leisure travel continues to rise globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To accommodate the new cabin layout, Emirates Engineering removed 120 Economy Class seats from the upper deck while adding 18 new Business Class seats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engineers also repositioned galley units, storage sections, partitions, overhead bins, and several aircraft systems during the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retrofit of the first aircraft required approximately 35,000 man-hours involving around 50 engineers and technicians. Emirates stated that future retrofits are expected to take only 30 days after operational lessons learned from the first project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates’ Fleet Modernization Push<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Emirates retrofit initiative remains one of the aviation industry\u2019s largest in-house fleet upgrade programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline currently refreshes roughly two aircraft every month through its Dubai engineering facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside cabin upgrades, Emirates has also expanded its sustainability efforts by repurposing materials removed from aircraft during retrofits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has converted retired cabin materials into products, including \u201cAircrafted\u201d luggage collections and backpacks donated to children in 10 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of 2026, Emirates expects all 15 of its two-class Airbus A380 aircraft to complete the retrofit process, further standardizing premium products across its long-haul network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
