WELLINGTON-<\/strong> Air New Zealand (NZ)<\/a> has announced a major international expansion from Christchurch Airport (CHC)<\/a>, adding new non-stop services to Singapore (SIN), Tokyo Narita (NRT), and Perth (PER).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new flights will begin between October and November 2026 and mark one of the airline\u2019s biggest South Island network expansions in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move strengthens Christchurch\u2019s role as the primary international gateway to New Zealand\u2019s South Island while improving long-haul access to Asia and Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air New Zealand said the expansion became possible after several Boeing 787 Dreamliners<\/a> returned to service following global engine maintenance disruptions, alongside the arrival of additional aircraft into the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air New Zealand New Routes from Christchurch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first Christchurch\u2013Singapore service will launch on October 28, followed by Christchurch\u2013Tokyo Narita on November 28. Christchurch\u2013Perth flights will begin on November 30, subject to regulatory approvals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline previously operated these routes at different points over the past decade, with Singapore<\/a> last served in 2020, Narita in 2015, and Perth in 2019. Their return reflects renewed demand for direct international travel from the South Island and stronger confidence in inbound tourism growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar<\/strong> said the airline is now in a position to expand again after aircraft availability improved. He added that the three routes are designed to reconnect Christchurch directly with key global hubs while improving travel flows across the South Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston described the agreement as an important development for New Zealand\u2019s<\/a> tourism and export sectors. She said stronger air links support business growth, improve cargo movement, and create new opportunities for regional economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airport Growth Strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the route announcement, Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding focused on long-term network development and sustainable growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partnership will align future planning between the airline and airport as international operations continue to expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson called the announcement a landmark moment for the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the addition of multiple widebody international services would support freight exporters, tourism operators, and local businesses across the South Island economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport has increasingly positioned itself as a long-haul hub capable of handling more direct international services. Airport officials also emphasized that attracting airlines requires years of collaboration, infrastructure planning, and market development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement comes as airlines across the Asia-Pacific region continue restoring capacity after years of operational disruptions and fleet shortages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Direct connections to Singapore and Tokyo will also improve onward access to Europe, Southeast Asia, and North America through partner airlines and Star Alliance networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tourism and Trade Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new routes are expected to reshape visitor entry patterns into New Zealand by encouraging more international travelers to arrive directly at the South Island rather than connecting through Auckland Airport (AKL)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Singapore route also strengthens cargo connectivity for exporters shipping premium food products and agricultural goods into Asian markets. Meanwhile, the Perth service adds another important trans-Tasman connection for business and leisure travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flights went on sale immediately after the announcement on May 20, 2026. Air New Zealand currently operates a fleet with an average age of 9.9 years and carried more than 16 million passengers in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
