LAS VEGAS-<\/strong> Allegiant Air (G4)<\/a> has announced a major route expansion covering eight new routes across twelve cities, with a strong focus on Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The move signals the carrier’s intent to capture demand left behind by the recent shutdown of Spirit Airlines (NK) in South Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expansion places Allegiant in direct competition with JetBlue (B6)<\/a> at FLL, while also adding service from Florida bases including St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE), Orlando Sanford (SFB), and Punta Gorda (PGD). Most of the new flights begin in early fall 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allegiant Air 8 New Routes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Allegiant Air announced four new routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the airport that served as Spirit Airlines’<\/a> home base until Spirit ceased operations earlier this month. The carrier is positioning itself to absorb a share of the demand created by Spirit’s exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fort Lauderdale buildout connects South Florida to New England and the Midwest. New service from FLL includes Boston<\/a>, Kansas City, and other major markets. The expansion shows that Allegiant intends to compete for Fort Lauderdale traffic rather than leave the market to JetBlue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue has moved quickly to expand at FLL. The airline aims to make Fort Lauderdale one of its three largest hubs and has added service to strengthen its position there. Allegiant’s entry creates direct head-to-head competition on key routes, TPG<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FLL to Omaha Eppley Airfield (OMA) begins October 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FLL to Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) begins October 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FLL to Kansas City International Airport (MCI) begins October 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) begins October 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PIE to Columbia Regional Airport (COU) in Missouri begins November 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florida Bases Beyond Fort Lauderdale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fort Lauderdale is not the only growth area for Allegiant. The Tuesday announcement added service for three additional Florida regions. These include the greater Orlando area through Orlando Sanford, the Tampa region through St. Pete-Clearwater, and the carrier’s longtime Punta Gorda base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Punta Gorda base remains a core part of Allegiant’s Florida network, and the new La Crosse route extends its reach into Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Key Numbers Behind the Expansion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Three of the announced routes were previously flown by Spirit before it shut down. These include FLL service to Boston, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of the new FLL routes put Allegiant in direct competition with JetBlue. These are the services to Boston and Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One route marks a return for the carrier. Allegiant previously operated flights between Orlando Sanford and Trenton, New Jersey, in 2017, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sun Country Acquisition Adds Context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Florida expansion follows shortly after Allegiant closed its acquisition of Minnesota-based Sun Country Airlines (SY)<\/a>, another budget carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deal expands Allegiant’s footprint in the low-cost segment as it grows its route network across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
