The carrier gradually restored capacity through May and June, although schedules still remain significantly below pre-crisis levels.

June performance indicates a more stable recovery phase, with the airline operating 678 flights to the United States, down 25% year-on-year.

The slower restoration reflects the operational complexity of rebuilding a long-haul hub network that depends heavily on connecting traffic through Doha.

The airline has publicly stated that its network restoration will occur in phases rather than through an immediate return to normal operations.

Qatar Airways aims to restore connectivity to over 150 global destinations during the current recovery period, though schedules remain subject to operational and regulatory approvals.

US services are among the most difficult routes to restore because they rely on long aircraft rotations, premium demand, and extensive onward connectivity to South Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Major Routes Prioritized

Qatar Airways has prioritized larger strategic gateways while delaying service resumptions to smaller US markets. New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the carrier’s largest US destination, is gradually returning to its normal 18 weekly flights during the quarter.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Miami International Airport (MIA) have also received priority due to their strong partnership connectivity with American Airlines and their importance within the oneworld alliance network.

Meanwhile, airports such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) continue operating with limited schedules or delayed resumptions.

Atlanta recorded only 22 flights during the quarter because operations are not scheduled to resume until mid-June, Simple Flying flagged. Boston also faces a delayed restart, while Los Angeles and San Francisco show reduced quarterly totals due to limited summer operations.

Despite the reductions, Qatar Airways’ US network continues to perform strongly in terms of passenger demand. Several routes historically recorded load factors above 90%, making them financially important once operational stability improves.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Recovery Challenges Persist for Qatar

The network rebuild has also affected alliance partner American Airlines (AA), which typically operates daily flights between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Doha under a joint arrangement with Qatar Airways.

American Airlines has adopted a more cautious recovery strategy and currently plans to resume Philadelphia–Doha services in September.

The route previously faced severe disruption when one flight was forced to turn back over the Mediterranean during escalating regional tensions earlier this year.

Stay tuned with us.
