Astana (KC), the flag carrier of Kazakhstan, will receive its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in September 2026, but direct flights from Almaty (ALA) to the United States remain off the table due to geopolitical restrictions.

The Kazakh carrier cannot overfly Russia because of ongoing sanctions, blocking the most efficient routing between Central Asia and North America.

This forces Air Astana to wait for a viable airspace solution before launching its planned US operations using the modern US-built widebody twinjets.

<figure States

At the airline’s Q1 results presentation, Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Canliel addressed the delivery timeline and route plans for the new Dreamliner fleet.

He confirmed that the first 787-9 will arrive in September 2026, with a second aircraft following in the later part of the year.

Canliel explained that Air Astana will conduct extensive short sector operations during the initial months to train pilots and cabin crew on the new widebody.

This practice will continue perhaps a bit beyond the delivery of the second aircraft, which is standard procedure for carriers introducing new widebody types.

While the 787-9 was acquired with long-haul ambitions in mind, the United States remains out of reach for now.

Canliel stated that the 787 will need to fly via a routing that the airline currently cannot operate due to sanctions, and this situation must be resolved before direct US service can be considered.

As reported by Simple Flying, this constraint mirrors challenges faced by several Central Asian and East Asian carriers since Russian airspace was closed to many international operators.

Inside Air Astana’s Boeing 787-9 Deal

Air Astana made global headlines in November 2025 when it announced an order for up to 15 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners during the C5+1 Summit.

Boeing described the agreement as Air Astana’s largest single airplane purchase in its history, and the deal was officially finalized three months later in February 2026.

The order breakdown includes 5 firm aircraft, 5 options, and 5 purchase rights. In addition, the carrier will receive 3 more 787-9s from aircraft leasing companies, potentially bringing the total Dreamliner fleet to 18 units.

This represents a substantial leap from Air Astana’s current widebody footprint of just three Boeing 767-300ER jets.

The existing 767 fleet operates international routes from Almaty (ALA) to Dubai (DXB), Male (MLE), Phuket (HKT), and Seoul Incheon (ICN). The 787 family has historically allowed operators to unlock hundreds of new city pairs, making it a strategic fit for Kazakhstan’s ambitions as an emerging aviation market.

Photo: Air Astana

Onboard Experience

The Boeing 787-9 will introduce a meaningful improvement to the onboard product across both cabins.

Canliel stated that customers are going to love the new product, adding that the aircraft brings a significant upgrade to the offering compared to the airline’s existing widebody fleet.

He also noted that the 787 will place Air Astana’s competitiveness at an even stronger position, enabling further growth on both medium and long-haul routes.

Rolling out this upgraded product across the network is expected to support the airline’s broader expansion strategy.

For context, aeroLOPA data shows that the existing Boeing 767-300ER fleet features 30 business class flatbeds in a staggered 1-2-1 forward-facing layout, along with 192 economy seats arranged seven-abreast in a 2-3-2 configuration.

The new 787-9 cabins will deliver a stronger product in both classes, alongside the quieter environment, larger windows, and improved cabin pressure associated with the Dreamliner family.

Photo: Air Astana

Network Growth Beyond US Market

While the United States remains a long-term target, the 787-9 will allow Air Astana to expand into other long-haul markets that do not require overflight of Russia.

The aircraft’s range and operating economics will support medium and long-haul growth across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Kazakhstan continues its quest to establish itself as an emerging aviation market, and Air Astana’s widebody expansion forms a central part of that strategy.

Once geopolitical conditions allow, the carrier is expected to revisit direct service to the United States as a strategic priority.

Stay tuned with us.
