Persistent delays in the 777-9 programme forced the airline to pivot, choosing instead to retrofit its existing A350-900 fleet.

When SQ announced the retrofit programme in late 2024, it set an ambitious timeline with the first long-haul aircraft entering service in Q2 2026 and the first ultra-long-range variant following in Q1 2027, with the full programme wrapping up by 2030.

That timeline has now slipped. A spokesperson for the airline confirmed the revised schedule, stating that the first retrofitted A350-900 long-haul aircraft will enter service in Q1 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.

The airline plans to unveil its enhanced cabin products later in 2026 but has not provided an updated entry-into-service date for the ultra-long-range variant.

The delay was foreshadowed by SQ’s recent Starlink announcement, which pegged Q1 2027 as the date for the first Starlink-equipped aircraft. The airline plans to install Starlink’s low Earth orbit broadband service on its A350-900 long-haul, A350-900 ultra-long-range, and A380 fleets.

The Starlink installations will coincide with the cabin retrofit work, confirming that the two programmes are running in parallel, MileLion reported.

Photo: Singapore Airlines

Why Seat Manufacturing Has Become a Bottleneck

The delays plaguing Singapore Airlines reflect a broader crisis in aircraft seat manufacturing. Modern premium cabin seats are no longer simple reclining chairs. They function as complex mini-suites with privacy doors, motorised moving parts, high-resolution screens, integrated power systems, and custom finishes.

Seat manufacturer Safran, one of the industry’s largest suppliers, delivered just 2,600 Business Class seats in 2025, an increase of only 150 units over the previous year. To illustrate the scale of the problem, Japan Airlines (JL) installs 54 Safran Unity seats on each of its Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. Safran’s entire annual output would equip fewer than 50 aircraft at that rate.

The globalised supply chain compounds the challenge. A single premium seat can involve approximately 3,000 parts sourced from 50 suppliers across 15 countries. Any disruption at one point in the chain, whether from trade disputes, regulatory changes, or production delays, can cascade through the entire manufacturing process.

Regulatory pressure has also intensified. Bodies like the FAA and EASA have implemented new seat certification requirements and adopted stricter interpretations of existing regulations. The pool of engineers qualified to perform certification work is extremely small, with some estimates placing the global total at around 200.

These factors have created situations where aircraft deliveries outpace cabin readiness. Lufthansa (LH) recently had to park two brand-new A350-900s at Teruel Airport (TEV) because their seats were not ready. Iberia (IB) took delivery of A350-900s with placeholder Economy seats temporarily installed in the front Business Class section.

Photo: Singapore Airlines

SIA’s Ageing Business Class Falls Behind Competitors

The delay compounds a growing competitive problem for Singapore Airlines. The airline’s primary long-haul Business Class seat, found on its A350-900 long-haul fleet and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, dates back to 2013. While functional, the product lacks privacy doors, mood lighting, Bluetooth audio, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and the adjustable social configurations now standard among competitors.

A slightly newer seat exists on the A380 fleet, offering a better social experience and double-bed capability in selected middle seats. However, with only 12 A380s in the fleet compared to 56 aircraft equipped with the 2013 seat, this product serves a limited portion of SQ’s long-haul network. The A380 seat, dating to 2017, also lacks doors and modern connectivity features.

The gap between seat generations is now historically wide. When the new Business Class finally enters service in 2027, 14 years will have passed since the current seat debuted, the longest interval in recent airline history.

Several competitors have already leapfrogged SQ during this period. Qatar Airways (QR) introduced its Qsuites in 2017 and plans to launch the replacement Qsuite 2.0 on the A350-1000 later in 2026. United Airlines (UA) launched its Polaris product in 2016 and has already started flying next-generation Polaris Suites on the San Francisco (SFO) to Singapore (SIN) route.

Photo: Live and Let’s Fly

What to Expect From SIA’s New First and Business Class

Singapore Airlines has released limited details about its upcoming products, but teaser images and a leaked patent filing offer several clues about the new First Class.

The new First Class suite will feature six suites in a layout with four window seats and two centre seats. The centre suites can combine into a double suite with a fully retracting privacy partition. Each suite will have a separate seat and bed, though the seat must stow to deploy the bed.

Suites will feature French doors, curved fully enclosed walls, and an ottoman for couple dining with a secondary seatbelt.

SQ CEO Goh Choon Phong has described the new First Class as a “quantum leap” that will set industry standards.

The new Business Class draws visible design cues from the Safran Unity platform. The seat will feature a privacy door in a staggered 1-2-1 all-forward-facing configuration.

Passengers will sleep parallel to the aisle on full-flat beds with no flipping required, a significant upgrade over the angled sleeping position on the 2013 seat. Both cabins will offer 4K screens, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and Bluetooth audio connectivity.

SQ is particularly vulnerable to manufacturing delays because it does not use off-the-shelf catalogue seats for its long-haul Business Class.

The airline opts for highly customised designs, which deliver a distinctive onboard experience but carry higher delay risk compared to airlines using standard products like the Collins Aerospace Super Diamond.

Photo: Singapore Airlines (via Facebook)

Programme Outlook

The original plan called for all 41 A350-900 retrofits to finish by 2030.
