CHICAGO-<\/strong> United Airlines (UA)<\/a> has begun deploying its brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners featuring the all-new United Elevate cabin configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These aircraft carry just 222 seats in a premium-heavy layout and currently operate out of San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on long-haul routes to London Heathrow (LHR) and Singapore Changi (SIN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier plans to expand the Elevate fleet steadily through 2026, adding a second and third daily frequency to London Heathrow (LHR)<\/a>, a second daily Singapore Changi (SIN) service, and a new route to Zurich Airport (ZRH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines (UA) expects to operate 33 of these reconfigured 787-9s by 2028, with roughly one new aircraft entering service each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Elevate Boeing 787-9 Different<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines already operates more than 80 Boeing 787 Dreamliners<\/a> across the 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 variants. The new Elevate 787-9s stand apart with a significantly denser premium cabin and a total order book of 71 aircraft. An additional 56 Boeing 787-10s are scheduled for delivery starting in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 222-seat configuration marks a sharp reduction from the 257 seats found on United’s older 787-9s. The layout includes 64 Polaris business class seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration across 16 rows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight of those seats are Polaris Studio products, positioned in the front row as an enhanced business class experience. Behind Polaris, 35 Premium Plus premium economy seats are spread across five rows in a 2-3-2 layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The economy cabin holds 123 seats in a standard 3-3-3 arrangement, with 39 of those designated as Economy Plus extra legroom seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New 787-9 Routes From San Francisco<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

United currently has four Elevate 787-9s in active service, registered as N21102, N51104, N61101, and N61103. All four are based at San Francisco International Airport (SFO)<\/a> and operate the following daily international flights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UA1\/2 between San Francisco (SFO) and Singapore Changi (SIN)<\/a> and UA901\/900 between San Francisco (SFO) and London Heathrow (LHR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has confirmed additional Elevate routes as more aircraft enter the fleet. Starting May 21, 2026, flight UA930\/939 adds a second daily San Francisco to London Heathrow service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From August 1, 2026, flight UA29\/28 introduces a second daily San Francisco to Singapore frequency. On September 1, 2026, two more routes come online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight UA948\/949 becomes the third daily London Heathrow departure, and flight UA44\/45 launches new service to Zurich (ZRH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By September 2026, every daily United flight from San Francisco to London, Singapore, and Zurich will feature the Elevate cabin product, OMAAT<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Identify a United Elevate 787-9 When Booking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is no prominent label in the standard booking flow that identifies an Elevate-configured aircraft. The most reliable indicator is the presence of a “Polaris Studio available” tag under the United Polaris fare options, assuming those seats remain available for purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelers can also check the seat map during booking, where the 222-seat, 1-2-1 Polaris layout will differ noticeably from the older 257-seat 787-9 configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United occasionally operates these aircraft on the San Francisco to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) route for crew familiarization purposes, though this is not a consistent schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schedule Reliability and Fleet Growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All published route dates remain subject to change, particularly given Boeing’s<\/a> ongoing delivery timeline uncertainties. United plans to scale from four aircraft today to 33 Elevate 787-9s by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increased premium seat count on these aircraft also creates more opportunities for upgrades and award redemptions on long-haul routes out of San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
