It is worth noting that gate-to-gate access has exceptions, as selected countries like Japan prohibit ground-based connectivity.

Real-world speed tests on Qatar Airways (QR) Starlink-equipped Boeing 777s have shown well over 100 Mbps, with some users reporting speeds north of 200 Mbps, as reported by Mainly Miles.

Compared to the typical experience on SQ today, which works for messaging and email but struggles with anything more demanding, this represents a significant step change.

Yeoh Phee Teik, SVP Customer Experience at Singapore Airlines, stated that Starlink will deliver next-generation high-speed connectivity, allowing passengers to stay entertained, connected, and productive from take-off to landing.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Aircraft Covered and Notable Exclusions

The Starlink installation covers three aircraft types in the SQ fleet: 34 Airbus A350 Long Haul jets, 7 Airbus A350 ULR jets, and 12 Airbus A380s. This totals roughly 53 aircraft requiring the retrofit.

Several fleet members are excluded from the rollout. The Boeing 777-300ER omission is expected, as these aircraft face retirement with Boeing 777-9 deliveries beginning from 2027.

The new 777-9s are likely to arrive Starlink-equipped from the factory, though the airline has not confirmed this.

The exclusion of the Boeing 787-10, Boeing 737-8 MAX, and Airbus A350 Medium Haul is more notable.

The 787-10 and 737-8 MAX fleets are relatively young with ongoing deliveries. The A350 Medium Haul aircraft serve regional and shorter long-haul routes, including flights to destinations like Tokyo (NRT), Mumbai (BOM), and Sydney (SYD).

Whether these aircraft will receive Starlink at a later stage or continue operating with the existing GX Aviation (SITAOnAir) Ka-band and Panasonic Ku-band Wi-Fi systems remains unclear.

For passengers, this means the connectivity experience on a trip to Tokyo, Mumbai, or Sydney could vary significantly depending on which aircraft type operates the flight.

Photo: Tobias Green | CPH Route Development

KrisFlyer Membership Requirement

Singapore Airlines will retain its policy requiring KrisFlyer or PPS Club membership for free Wi-Fi access in Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

Suites, First Class, and Business Class passengers receive unlimited free Wi-Fi automatically, as do PPS Club members in any cabin.

Premium Economy and Economy travelers must enter their KrisFlyer membership details at booking or check-in to unlock free access. Given that Starlink installations can be completed in as little as 2 days during routine maintenance, and only around 53 aircraft need the upgrade, the extended timeline raises questions.

Qatar Airways, by comparison, has rolled out Starlink across a much larger fleet in a shorter timeframe.

The longer schedule likely reflects integration with the airline’s broader cabin refurbishment program rather than the Wi-Fi upgrade alone.

For the A350 fleet, Starlink installation will probably coincide with planned cabin refits that include new First Class and Business Class cabins and an all-new KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system.

The Airbus A350 Long Haul cabin refits are already underway from Q2 2026, but Starlink will not be part of this initial phase. This is a somewhat surprising decision, given the opportunity to bundle both upgrades together.

The first Starlink-equipped SQ flights are expected in early 2027, likely on A350 ULR services to Newark (EWR), New York (JFK), and Los Angeles (LAX).

These routes feature long flight times and a business-heavy passenger profile, making them ideal candidates for the initial deployment.

The Q1 2027 timeline aligns with the introduction of refitted A350 ULR aircraft featuring all-new First Class and Business Class cabins.

Photo:-Olivier CABARET | Flickr

How SQ Starlink Compares to Other Airlines

Singapore Airlines joins a growing list of premium carriers adopting Starlink, including Qatar Airways (QR), Air France (AF), SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK), United Airlines (UA), and British Airways (BA).

Alternative LEO providers such as OneWeb by Panasonic and Amazon Leo were considered, but Starlink’s scale and proven track record across multiple carrier adoptions made it the clear choice.

Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, stated that passengers and crew will experience seamless, low-latency connectivity, adding that Starlink is redefining what is possible for both leisure and business travelers on long-haul and ultra-long-haul flights.

Stay tuned with us.
