Data submitted by Kang Dae-sik of the People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly\u2019s National Defense Committee, shows that 896 veteran pilots left between 2017 and March 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veteran pilots are defined as those with 8 to 17 years of service who can independently execute missions and train junior pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first 3 months of 2025 alone, 47 such pilots exited military service to join commercial airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/southkorea\/defense\/20260503\/pilot-exodus-in-military-air-force-loses-veteran-pilots-to-commercial-airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Korea Times<\/a>, this pattern reflects increasing reliance by airlines on military-trained pilots to meet growing demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-distribution-of-pilots-across-airlines\">Distribution of Pilots Across Airlines<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A majority of departing pilots joined leading full-service carriers. A January 2025 Air Force survey identified the following key reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Salary gap with commercial airlines (68.9 percent)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor work-life balance (67.5 percent)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing instability (61.4 percent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Commercial aviation roles provide structured schedules, higher income, and improved living standards, making them more attractive than military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most pilots leave shortly after completing their mandatory service obligations.
