FORT LAUDERDALE\u2014<\/strong> Spirit Airlines (NK)<\/a> ceased all operations on May 2, 2026, cancelling every scheduled flight without warning and stranding thousands of passengers across its network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier, which relied heavily on Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) as its primary hub, collapsed after surging jet fuel costs \u2014 driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran \u2014 made continued operations financially impossible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue Airways (B6)<\/a> responded the same day, announcing a package of fare relief measures and a major network expansion from FLL to absorb displaced travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue Rescue Offer After Spirit Airlines Shutdown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue is offering $99 one-way fares to passengers who hold proof of a valid, cancelled Spirit itinerary on the same route or at a co-located airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These fares cover travel through May 6, 2026, and eligible customers must call 1-800-JETBLUE to book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separately, JetBlue capped all Blue Basic fares at $299 on nonstop routes to and from FLL and SJU that Spirit previously operated, with the cap applying to new bookings made through May 8, 2026, for travel within the same window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fare cap targets a specific concern: as thousands of passengers simultaneously seek alternative travel, last-minute prices on competing routes tend to climb sharply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue’s decision to cap rather than simply discount fares signals a deliberate effort to manage affordability across the full demand surge, not just for passengers with proof of cancellation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline confirmed it will monitor capacity and adjust its response as booking volumes evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FLL Network Expansion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue plans to add 11 entirely new cities to its Fort Lauderdale network, with bookings opening on the evening of May 4, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New nonstop routes from FLL include Baltimore (BWI) with three daily flights starting July 9, Charlotte (CLT) at three daily from July 9, Nashville (BNA) at three daily from July 9, Houston (IAH) at three daily from July 9, Detroit (DTW) at two daily from July 9, Chicago (ORD)<\/a> at two daily from July 9, and Ponce, Puerto Rico (PSE) at one daily from July 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International additions include Barranquilla, Colombia (BAQ), launching October 1, and Cali, Colombia (CLO) from October 15, each operating once daily. Columbus, Ohio (CMH) and Indianapolis (IND) both begin service on November 2, 2026, with one daily flight each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond new cities, JetBlue adds frequencies on existing FLL routes to Austin, Dallas\/Fort Worth, Raleigh-Durham, Aguadilla, Santo Domingo, and Santiago de los Caballeros. A new route between BWI and SJU also launches on November 2, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combined, the expansion adds 27 daily flights, pushing JetBlue’s Fort Lauderdale operation to nearly 130 daily departures this summer \u2014 more than 75% above its 2025 levels and the largest schedule the airline has ever run from the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support for Spirit Staff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue extended practical support beyond passengers. The airline activated its jumpseat agreement for Spirit pilots and flight attendants who need to deadhead home following the sudden shutdown, with availability subject to cabin seating and space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JetBlue also announced it will open interview opportunities for qualified Spirit employees seeking new positions within the carrier, providing a direct pathway for experienced aviation workers entering an uncertain job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
