FRANKFURT-<\/strong> Lufthansa Group<\/a> is removing 20,000 short-haul flights from its summer schedule through October, reducing overall network capacity by less than one percent in available seat kilometers (ASK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision follows a sharp doubling of jet fuel prices triggered by the outbreak of the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cancellations target unprofitable short-haul routes operated by Lufthansa CityLine out of Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC), while the group simultaneously expands existing operations across its hubs in Zurich (ZRH), Vienna (VIE), and Brussels (BRU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers will continue to have full access to the group’s global route network, particularly long-haul connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lufthansa Group Cancels 20,000 Flights for Summer <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The capacity reduction spans all six Lufthansa Group hubs: Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Zurich (ZRH), Vienna (VIE), Brussels (BRU), and Rome (FCO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While routes are being cut at Frankfurt and Munich, the group is expanding capacity at the remaining 4 hubs to maintain global connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long-haul access for passengers will be achieved significantly more efficiently than before through this consolidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restructuring accelerates a key strategic step within Lufthansa Group’s hub airlines: Lufthansa (LH)<\/a>, SWISS (LX)<\/a>, Austrian Airlines (OS)<\/a>, Brussels Airlines (SN)<\/a>, and ITA Airways (AZ)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These five carriers form the core of the group’s European hub network, and the consolidation is being executed across all of them simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first phase of cuts, covering 120 daily flight cancellations effective through May 31, was implemented on the day of the announcement. All affected passengers have been notified directly by the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Routes Suspended and Consolidated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At least 3 destinations have been temporarily removed from the schedule entirely. Bydgoszcz (BZG) and Rzeszow (RZE) in Poland, and Stavanger (SVG) in Norway, all previously served from Frankfurt (FRA), are no longer operating under the current flight plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten additional connections are being consolidated within the group via alternative hubs rather than being suspended outright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The affected airports are Heringsdorf (HDF), Cork (ORK), Gdansk (GDN), Ljubljana (LJU), Rijeka (RJK), Sibiu (SBZ), Stuttgart (STR), Trondheim (TRD), Tivat (TIV), and Wroclaw (WRO). Passengers on these routes will be rerouted through other Lufthansa Group hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuel Cost Surge Forces Network Efficiency Push<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jet fuel prices have doubled since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, making a significant number of short-haul routes financially unviable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 20,000 cancelled flights through October are projected to eliminate more than 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel consumption across the group’s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address supply reliability, Lufthansa Group is pursuing a range of measures, including the physical procurement of jet fuel as well as price hedging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group has confirmed that its jet fuel supply is secured for the coming weeks, and for flights scheduled in the summer timetable, a largely stable fuel supply is expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revised Summer Route Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Medium-term route planning for June onward is currently under revision to reflect the capacity reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The updated schedule will be published in late April or early May and will cover short-haul optimizations for the full summer season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group has stated that the revised plan is designed to ensure schedule stability for the entire summer flight plan period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The broader consolidation reflects Lufthansa Group’s strategic direction of prioritizing efficient feeder traffic for long-haul routes over high-frequency but unprofitable regional flying across its European hub network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
