Japanese law enforcement has escalated action against the illegal import of etomidate, a regulated anesthetic increasingly misused in vape cartridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The substance has gained attention due to its harmful effects and rising abuse among young people in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Haneda Airport (HND), authorities arrested Liu Ting-yu, a 50-year-old Taiwanese woman, on April 16 for allegedly smuggling approximately 4 kilograms of etomidate in a suitcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police described this as a record seizure. She denied the charges, stating that she had borrowed the suitcase and was unaware of its contents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate case, at Kansai International Airport (KIX), Tuela Kanwara, a 31-year-old Thai woman, was arrested for allegedly smuggling 1,002 cartridges containing about 500 grams of etomidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She arrived on a flight from Thailand on November 5. This marked the first etomidate-related police action at Kansai Airport since the substance was classified as controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cartridges were concealed inside 7 snack packets, indicating a deliberate attempt to evade customs detection. She was traveling with a Malaysian man, who was also arrested and indicted for smuggling stimulants into Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
