These changes particularly affect routes out of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Newark, where Singapore Airlines operates long-haul services.

Polaris Lounges are known for high-end amenities, including à la carte dining, shower suites, nap rooms, and full-service bars. United Club lounges, which will now host displaced passengers, offer a more limited experience with buffet-style food and reduced premium services.

The change marks a downgrade in ground service standards for affected travellers, especially premium cabin passengers who previously relied on alliance-wide reciprocity benefits.

Photo: United

Overcrowding pressure on Polaris Lounges

United has attributed the decision to increasing congestion at Polaris Lounges across its US hubs. The airline continues to expand premium cabin capacity while also planning to extend Polaris Lounge access to domestic transcontinental premium routes, further intensifying demand.

At San Francisco International Airport (SFO), lounge overcrowding has become particularly acute, with reported wait times for dining services exceeding two hours during peak periods. The airline is now prioritising access for joint venture partners to manage capacity more effectively.

Industry observers note that premium lounges across global hubs are facing similar pressure as airlines expand business class seating and frequency without proportional lounge expansion.

Photo: Singapore Airlines

Bottom Line

Singapore Airlines passengers retain access to alternative lounges depending on airport arrangements.
