AUCKLAND-<\/strong> Air New Zealand (NZ)<\/a> is set to introduce Skynest bunk beds in Economy Class, marking a major shift in long-haul passenger comfort. The rollout will begin on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key ultra-long-haul routes such as New York (JFK) to Auckland (AKL) highlight the airline\u2019s strategy to improve rest on flights exceeding 17 hours, where demand for lie-flat comfort continues to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air New Zealand Economy Bunk Beds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Skynest concept emerged after 3 years of research and development at Air New Zealand\u2019s innovation center in Auckland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline first unveiled the idea in early 2020, positioning it as a practical solution for improving sleep in Economy Class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the reveal, Air New Zealand filed patents and trademarks to protect the Skynest design. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted timelines, delaying further progress and pushing the concept into temporary silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 2022, the airline reintroduced Skynest with plans to install it on newly delivered Boeing 787<\/a> aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivery delays extended the timeline, but the airline has now confirmed that the product will finally enter service later this year. This marks the transition of Skynest from concept to operational reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabin Layout and Skynest Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Skynest units will replace six standard Economy Class seats and will be installed in the center of the front section of the main Economy cabin. This placement allows efficient access while maintaining cabin density.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each installation consists of six individual bunk beds stacked in a compact configuration, ensuring minimal disruption to the overall seating layout while introducing a new service tier within Economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each bunk measures approximately 6.6 feet in length and is designed for short-duration rest. Passengers receive fresh bedding, a pillow, and a blanket for each session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional features include USB-A and USB-C charging ports, a reading light, a small storage belt, and a semi-sheer privacy curtain that provides personal space without full enclosure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bunks are not certified for taxi, takeoff, or landing, which limits their use to mid-flight cruise phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
