DALLAS-<\/strong> A Renaissance Hotel on 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is suing Southwest Airlines (WN)<\/a> for $215,576<\/strong> after a flight attendant allegedly caused extensive water damage by activating the sprinkler system during a layover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident flooded multiple guest rooms and public areas at the property used for Southwest Airlines crew stays near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit claims the crew member negligently interfered with the fire sprinkler in her room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water spread to several other rooms, plus communal areas, the front desk, and office rooms. Southwest Airlines faces liability for its employee’s actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hotel Seeks Accountability for Sprinkler Damage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Renaissance Hotel on 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale (FLL) filed the suit after the February 1, 2025, incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A female flight attendant with Southwest Airlines (WN) stayed at the hotel during a work layover. She allegedly negligently interfered with the fire sprinkler system in her room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sprinkler activation flooded not only her room but also multiple other hotel rooms. Water reached communal areas, the front desk area, and several office rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hotel staff canceled reservations in the affected areas while experts arrived to dry out, sanitize, and deodorize the spaces. Total repair costs reached $215,576.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hotel retained an independent fire sprinkler expert who will testify that the system did not malfunction and activated only due to the negligent actions of the flight attendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suit names both the flight attendant and Southwest Airlines as defendants. It argues the airline bears responsibility for negligent acts by its employees during official layovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reported by PYOK<\/a>, the hotel originally filed its suit in a local court. Southwest Airlines moved to have the case transferred to a Florida district court due to the claim amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier filed paperwork in the Fort Lauderdale district court, but redacted its own internal report on the incident as well as a statement written by the flight attendant. Southwest Airlines has yet to formally respond to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar Past Incident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This case echoes a 2023 event at a crew layover hotel in Des Moines, Iowa. A Southwest Airlines (WN) flight attendant faced arrest after an alleged rampage. The crew member reportedly attacked hotel guests and firefighters with a toilet plunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also tripped fire alarms around the hotel and partially flooded the property by breaking a sprinkler system nozzle in one of the maintenance rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guests described the attendant chasing people around the hotel with the toilet plunger. One victim said she had been evacuating the hotel via the stairwell after the fire alarm went off when she came across the flight attendant on the 18th floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspect allegedly chased after the victim while holding the plunger and shouting, \u201cI\u2019m going to f**king get you.\u201d The victim managed to escape uninjured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crew member was later charged with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
