PENTAGON, WASHINGTON, D.C.\u2014<\/strong> The U.S. Air Force<\/a> has opened applications for its Fiscal Year 2026 Aviation Bonus (AvB) program, giving eligible active-duty aviators a two-month window from April 1 to May 31, 2026, to apply for annual incentive pay of up to $50,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FY26 program targets pilots, remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) pilots, air battle managers (ABMs), and combat systems officers (CSOs), offering monetary incentives in exchange for active-duty service commitments to strengthen long-term personnel forecasting for the Air Force’s warfighting mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FY26 AvB program introduces a notable structural change: higher compensation rates for shorter contract lengths, specifically within the fighter, bomber, and U-2 reconnaissance communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contracts range from a minimum of three years to a maximum of 12 years, with annual rates reaching up to $50,000 depending on career field and experience level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Air Force estimates 10,314 pilots<\/strong> will receive an aviator bonus in FY2026, compared to 8,941 in FY2025 \u2014 a 15 percent year-over-year increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This growth is partly driven by the Rated Officer Retention Demonstration Program, which launched in 2023 to incentivize active-duty pilots<\/a> approaching the end of their initial 10-year service commitment to re-enlist for an additional four to 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who Is Eligible for the FY2026 AvB Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The FY26 AvB program applies to commissioned officers at the rank of lieutenant colonel and below. To qualify, an officer must be rated for operational flying duty and must currently be receiving monthly aviation incentive pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program covers active-duty Airmen as well as Air Reserve Component Airmen serving under the Voluntary Limited Period of Active Duty (VLPAD) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remotely piloted aircraft pilots, air battle managers, and combat systems officers are explicitly included alongside traditional fixed-wing and multi-role pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Payment Timeline and How to Apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Approved applicants can expect bonus payments within three weeks of final processing by the Defense Finance Accounting Service (DFAS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The payment timeline begins after the applicant’s submission receives full approval through the official review chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eligible Airmen can access complete eligibility requirements and application instructions through the MyFSS portal, which requires a Common Access Card (CAC) for login. All applications must be submitted by May 31, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic Purpose Behind the Bonus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For FY2026, the Air Force has requested an additional $15.6 million for its officer retention bonus program, as the service expects more officers to take advantage of bonus programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation-related fields continue to dominate the service’s incentive pay budget. Flying pay accounts for 99 percent of the Air Force’s $469 million incentive pay request for commissioned officers in FY2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AvB program is designed to counterbalance the strong commercial aviation market, where experienced military pilots are frequently recruited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By offering competitive multi-year contracts with front-loaded financial incentives for shorter commitments, the Air Force aims to retain mid-career aviators who represent the highest institutional investment in training and operational experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
