SHANGHAI-<\/strong> Airbus<\/a> has secured a major narrowbody aircraft order from China Eastern Airlines (MU)<\/a>, reinforcing its position in China\u2019s fast-growing aviation market. The deal covers 101 A320neo family aircraft and is valued at approximately $15.8 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China Eastern Airlines, based at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), will receive these aircraft between 2028 and 2032 as part of its ongoing fleet expansion strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airbus Secures 101 Aircraft Order from China Eastern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Euractiv News<\/a> confirmed a significant commercial win with China Eastern Airlines through an agreement for 101 A320neo family aircraft. The order, disclosed via a Shanghai Stock Exchange filing, highlights sustained demand for fuel-efficient narrowbody jets in Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deal is valued at $15.8 billion, marking another milestone for Airbus in China. The manufacturer has steadily expanded its footprint in the region, supported by strong demand from both full-service and low-cost carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2025 alone, multiple Chinese operators collectively placed 148 Airbus orders, reflecting a broader market shift toward fleet modernization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China Eastern stated that delivery timelines remain flexible and may be adjusted based on operational and market conditions, subject to mutual agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A320neo Family Mix Enhances Operational Flexibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The order includes multiple variants from the A320neo family, notably the Airbus A321neo and the long-range A321XLR. These aircraft offer improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and extended range capabilities compared to earlier models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A321neo provides higher passenger capacity, accommodating up to 244 passengers in a high-density layout, compared to 195 on the A320neo. In typical two-class configurations, the A321neo carries around 206 passengers, while the A320neo seats about 165.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Range performance also sets these aircraft apart. The A320neo can operate up to 3,500 nautical miles, while the A321neo extends this to 3,650 nautical miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A321LR increases range further to 4,000 nautical miles, and the A321XLR reaches up to 4,700 nautical miles, enabling airlines to operate long, thin routes with improved economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airbus Dominates China Eastern\u2019s Fleet Composition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

China Eastern Airlines operates one of the largest fleets in Asia, with 698 aircraft currently in service. Airbus aircraft account for 469 of these, representing over two-thirds of the total fleet, Simple Flying<\/a> flagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing aircraft<\/a> make up 184 units, while COMAC contributes 45 aircraft. Despite this mix, Airbus remains the dominant supplier, particularly in the narrowbody segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline\u2019s narrowbody operations rely heavily on the A320 family. Its current fleet includes 32 A319-100s, 139 A320-200s, and 74 A321-200s from the older A320ceo series. The newer A320neo family is rapidly expanding, with 121 A320neos and 41 A321neos already in service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This latest order will further accelerate the transition toward next-generation aircraft, improving fuel efficiency and supporting network expansion across domestic and regional routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
