The walkout is scheduled for March 12 and March 13 and is expected to severely impact operations at major hubs, including Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC).

The strike has been organized by the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union as negotiations with the airline over pension reforms and pay conditions continue to stall. Pilots at CityLine will participate in the strike only on March 12, while the mainline pilot walkout will continue for the full 48 hours.

Airline officials expect large-scale disruption across Germany’s aviation network during the strike period. The airline has warned that nearly all scheduled flights could be grounded, although some routes to and from the Middle East may continue operating.

Lufthansa has started contingency planning to reduce the disruption as much as possible. The airline is exploring options to move passengers onto flights operated by other group carriers such as Eurowings and Discover Airlines.

Airlines within the Lufthansa Group in neighboring countries, including Austrian Airlines and SWISS, may also assist by carrying affected passengers on alternate routes.

Photo: Lufthansa

Pilot Union Dispute

The strike stems from two separate labor disputes between the airline and its pilot workforce. The first dispute concerns Lufthansa’s plan to change the structure of its pilot pension program.

Under the proposed plan, pensions would move from a defined benefit model to a defined contribution scheme. Pilots argue that the new system would place greater financial risk on employees because retirement income would depend on investment performance.

A second dispute focuses on employment conditions at Lufthansa CityLine. The union claims the regional carrier was designed to operate with lower pay and reduced benefits compared with the mainline airline.

Union leaders said they attempted to avoid further escalation but claimed negotiations had stalled after a previous warning strike.

The earlier one-day strike in February forced the airline to cancel nearly 800 flights and disrupted travel plans for around 130,000 passengers, PYOK reported.

Photo: Lufthansa City

Passenger Rights EU261

Passengers affected by the upcoming strike could be entitled to compensation under European Union air passenger rights regulations. EU261 rules allow compensation when a flight is delayed by more than three hours or canceled with less than 14 days’ notice.

Because the strike involves the airline’s own employees, it may not qualify as an extraordinary circumstance under the regulation. This means passengers may be eligible to claim compensation depending on the final outcome of the disruption.

Even when compensation is disputed, airlines must still assist stranded travelers. This includes meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation for overnight delays, and transportation between the airport and accommodation.

Lufthansa has advised passengers to check their flight status regularly and monitor updates through official communication channels. Travelers may also receive rebooking options or alternative routes as the airline continues to adjust its schedule during the strike period.

Photo: Lufthansa

Lufthansa Remarks

Lufthansa (LH) has released a special flight schedule after the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union called for strikes on March 12 and 13, 2026. The airline expects to operate more than half of its originally planned flights.

Operations at major hubs Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC) will continue with reduced schedules, while some flights will be handled by partner airlines to limit passenger disruption.

Michael Niggemann, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, responsible for Human Resources and Legal Affairs, said:

I regret the renewed strike call by the Vereinigung Cockpit union. This escalation is completely incomprehensible. Especially not at a time when we are experiencing a new level of geopolitical uncertainty with the war in Iran and passengers worldwide are affected. The union’s actions are also incomprehensible in terms of content: We already offer a high level of company pension provision at Lufthansa Classic, which guarantees very good retirement security both in an internal comparison within the Lufthansa Group and with other airlines, industries, and companies.

This company pension scheme has even been further improved over the past two years with a significant increase in pensionable remuneration for our pilots. Given the low margin at Lufthansa Classic, which in itself would not allow for investment in new aircraft, there is no scope for further increases. Strikes will not change this.

We have offered pay increases to the pilots of our subsidiary Lufthansa Cityline. Here, too, escalation is unnecessary because we have shown a clear willingness to find a solution.

The path of escalation chosen by the Vereinigung Cockpit union is not the right one. Instead of further worsening the development opportunities for Lufthansa Classic through strikes, we should rather enter into discussions about modernization and the future size of the fleet, which will have a direct and immediate impact on the career prospects of pilots.
Michael Niggemann, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG responsible for Human Resources and Legal Affairs

Lufthansa Adjusts Flight Operations During Pilot Strike

Lufthansa confirmed that more than 50 percent of its planned passenger flights will operate on both strike days. The airline expects long-haul services to perform better, with around 60 percent of scheduled long-haul flights continuing as planned.

The airline prioritized maintaining essential connectivity across its network. Operational adjustments include aircraft swaps and support from other airlines within the Lufthansa Group, as well as partner carriers.

Francesco Sciortino, Hub Manager Frankfurt and Accountable Manager Lufthansa Airlines, stated that the company’s main goal is to transport as many passengers as possible despite the strike action. He also acknowledged the pilots who volunteered to work during the strike period to maintain operations.

Support from Lufthansa Group and Partner Airlines

To stabilize the schedule, Lufthansa is transferring several flights to other Lufthansa Group airlines and partner carriers. These adjustments apply mainly to routes operating to and from Frankfurt and Munich.

The airline also plans to deploy larger aircraft on selected routes. This strategy increases seat capacity and helps accommodate passengers from cancelled flights.

Cargo Operations Remain Largely Stable

Lufthansa Cargo (LH) expects limited disruption. The cargo division plans to operate more than 80 percent of its scheduled cargo flights during the strike.

Maintaining cargo connectivity remains a priority because many shipments include time sensitive goods and industrial supply chain materials.

Middle East Flights Exempt from Strike Action

The Vereinigung Cockpit union confirmed that flights to the Middle East will be excluded from the strike due to the current geopolitical situation.

One scheduled flight from Frankfurt (FRA) to Riyadh (RUH), Saudi Arabia, will therefore operate as planned on Thursday.

Lufthansa City Airlines and CityLine Operations

Lufthansa City Airlines will operate all of its scheduled flights on both strike days. Meanwhile, Lufthansa CityLine will face disruptions on Thursday due to the strike but expects to restore nearly its full schedule by Friday.

These regional carriers play an important role in maintaining feeder traffic to Lufthansa’s main hubs.

Passenger Notifications and Travel Advice

Lufthansa is directly informing affected passengers by email. Travelers who do not receive notifications can assume their flights remain scheduled at the moment.

Passengers are advised to review and update their contact details in their booking records. Accurate contact information allows the airline to communicate schedule changes quickly if further disruptions occur.

Stay tuned with us.
